The Memorial Day Parade will begin with a military flyover and the Friends of Lima are encouraging anyone who wishes to join in to meet at Northland Plaza at 10 a.m.

LIMA —The Lima Memorial Day Parade is set to return for the holiday for the first time since the pandemic began.
Friends of Lima spokesperson Jewel Harris said that the event, which was announced in January, is always special and important to show love to veterans.
“We’d really like to encourage the whole community to come out in fellowship,” she said. “We have been MIA for about three years now so this is very special and very important to the citizens of Lima as we show our veterans how much we love them, including fallen soldiers as well as those who are still with us. It’s good to show them that they are cared about and and they are still loved and in our hearts.”
The parade will begin with a military flyover and the Friends of Lima are encouraging anyone who wishes to join in to meet at 10 a.m.
“People can line up along the street or if they want to walk with us we encourage everyone to come out for a great time,” Harris said. “And it doesn’t just end after the parade. I encourage people to come out to the 311 building where they can have food and fun and activities.”
Additionally there will be a wreath laying service and celebration of life at the VFW Post 1275 beginning at 11 a.m.
“Neighbors love the parade, but we are a community that just loves veterans,” Harris said. ” We want everyone to feel like we’re stronger together.”
And this will not be the last Friends of Lima event to take place in the near future.
“We exist to serve any event that benefits Lima or the surrounding areas,” Harris said. “With that being said, we have multiple members of the business community with us. We all share ideas and come together as a collective unit and piggyback off of other organizations in support of the mission of connecting the community. We encourage anyone to get involved if they are interested by checking us out on social media.”

This year’s parade starts at Northland Plaza at 10 a.m. Monday and will travel down Main Street.
Students from area schools will sing the national anthem along the route and the five oldest local veterans will serve as grand marshals.
