Real Wheels: ‘Exactly, what is it?’ It certainly is not your everyday truck

LIMA – “Well, well … will you look at that,” the elderly man said to his wife, pointing to the vehicle a few yards in front of them.

She studied it for a few seconds, then crumpled her nose, and snapped back, “Exactly, what is it?”

Her husband replied, “I’d say it’s somebody having a little bit of fun.”

For Lima’s Dave Webb, a comment like that means one thing: Mission accomplished.

The 65-year-old man says he “strives to be different.” And being “different” certainly sums up the large truck Webb had on display at the Lima Noon Optimist Home Show in March.

Consider this:

• The truck had spikes protruding from its wheels, similar to those used by a Roman chariot in the race scenes of the movie “Ben-Hur.”

• The arm rests inside the vehicle are made to look like skeleton bones. Likewise, the door handles on the outside of the car are all bone.

• The stick shift resembles a rocket.

• Decals? There are many, including one warning people the truck is “bad to the bone.” Another refers to the vehicle as “Spider’s Chop Shop.” An image of “the town hussy” hints that this bad boy may really be a she, as does the vehicle’s name, “Miss Behavin’.”

• On the back of the truck is a ramp that carries a scary-looking vehicle called “the rat patrol.”

Where does one find a truck like this?

In Delphos, said Webb. As for its decor, that comes from ideas that just pop into his head.

At least one person – his wife – wasn’t surprised when he came home one day saying he wanted to spend money on the perfect vehicle — an old, beat up dump truck.

“She knows I have oil running through my veins,” he said. “The truck had been sitting in the same spot for 16 years, collecting rust. It’s a 1954 Chevrolet that was originally a dump truck … the old ramp kind that used to carry race cars. It was begging for some attention.”

He calls it “my “Delphos truck.”

Webb enjoys the reaction he receives when people first see the truck. Some have compared his vehicle to the “time-machine car” in the movie, “Back to the future.”

“The kids really like it,” Webb said. “That’s what means a lot to me.”
