Moreno touts newcomer status in Lima campaign stop

LIMA —Following the formal announcement of his candidacy for Ohio’s U.S. Senate seat in 2024 earlier this month, Cleveland businessman Bernie Moreno made a stop at Kewpee in Lima on Thursday

Moreno will be running against Ohio State Senator Matt Dolan (R-Chagrin Falls). The two candidates are hoping to obtain a seat in the U.S. Congress where Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) currently holds office. Moreno is making his way around Ohio this week.

Moreno previously held a campaign to run for office in the 2022 election. Moreno weighed in on his decision to run again for senate.

“Since I dropped out of the race decided to run again, for one simple reason, the country has gotten much worse,” said Moreno. “And the reason it’s gotten worse is that we keep sending career politicians insiders to go to Washington, DC, that have never done anything in a private sector. They don’t understand how any of these things work. If we don’t change who we send to D.C. we’ll never change Washington, D.C., and we know it’s broken. We have to fix it. We fix it by sending different kinds of people.”

Moreno and Dolan are the first two Republicans to formally announce their candidacies for the primary election in May of 2024. Other Republicans said to be vying for the primary nomination include Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, U.S. Rep Warren Davidson and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.

“I think we’re only going to have a two-person field. I think it’s just gonna be me and my current opponent and I think it’s a nice contrast,” said Moreno. “I know the media and the Democrats would love a messy primary. But we’re not going to have that. We’re going to spend our resources to take down Sherrod Brown.”

Moreno used his station at Kewpee to rail against the lines at the normally busy lunch stop, claiming wait times were long because “you have a government paying people to stay home.”

Moreno said if elected he hopes to focus on three things: inflation, the southern border and deescalating the situation in Ukraine.

“If you want a professional politician and an insider, I’m not your person,” said Moreno. “I’ll be here in Lima so much you’ll get sick of seeing me. I’m going to go to every nook and cranny of Ohio and I’m going to work hard, just the way I’ll do if I get the honor of getting elected. I’ll work hard to fight for the people of Ohio in Washington D.C.”
