Honoring a Lima legend

LIMA — It has been nearly 22 years since his death, but Lima jazz music legend Joe Henderson will soon be immortalized in downtown Lima.

Columbus-based artist Bryan Moss has been working on the mural of Henderson since Wednesday evening, with the mural expected to be completed Friday, according to a release from ArtSpace/Lima. The mural is located in the alcove behind the ArtSpace building off Cherry Alley.

Born in 1937 in Lima, Henderson made his name as a jazz tenor saxophonist in the 1960s, with his first recording as a band leader, 1963’s “Page One”, becoming one of the most popular releases for the Blue Note jazz recording label, according to Henderson’s National Endowment for the Arts biography. His career included collaborations with such jazz legends as Freddie Hubbard, Louis Hayes and Herbie Hancock.

A four-time Grammy Award winner, Henderson suffered a stroke in 1998, ending his playing career, but he was named an NEA jazz master the following year. He died in 2001.
