Pickle’s Blues Weekend to return to Old City Prime

LIMA — Local band Prudence performed at the Pickles Blues Weekend at Old City Prime’s Upper Lounge last year. This year, the college band made of Shawnee High School graduates McCartney Robinson, Austin Lewis and Dylan Felter hopes to keep the good vibes that they established previously.

“Well, if it’s anything like last year, we’re hoping that the place will be just as packed as it was and we’ll have about the same response,” Felter, who plays drums, said. “It was great to play last year. People loved us and we’re back even though normally they don’t bring back the same band two years in a row.”

Felter said that the band plays a wide variety of music from oldies to today’s hits, but at Pickles, the audience will be able to hear music that you would normally expect from a blues show.

“For this weekend, we’re going to stick to more of our bluesy, jazzy stuff,” he said. “We usually play a lot more, but this is blues weekend.”

While Prudence, named after the word meaning wisdom, will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, they will be joined by headliner Omar Coleman and Westside Soul.

The event is a nice change of pace for Prudence, though, who are normally found playing sets at area bars where the crowd is not necessarily there just to hear their show.

“It was nice to see a crowd that was there to listen to the band,” Felter said of the previous year. “Playing at a bar where people are there to drink and not specifically for the band is one thing. And it’s always nice to get a different response than what we’re used to. We had that last year and we’re hoping to get that back again.”

If you are thinking of judging the band by their appearance, Felter said that you should reconsider.

“We’re all a bunch of young guys, but we play music that has been around for a long time,” he said. “You wouldn’t guess what we play by one look at us. We can go through Elvis and the Beatles up through Green Day and Morgan Wallen. We play a range.”
