Real Wheels: Muscle, power … good looking, too — Celina man returns 1966 Chevelle back to its glory

CELINA – To see it now, you wouldn’t believe the 1966 Chevelle Super Sport was the same car that Lynn Boroff received from a neighbor 14 years ago.

“It needed a complete restoration,” the Celina man said.

And being able to bring back that Chevelle’s muscle, power and rumble is something that to this day Boroff is especially proud of.

“I built the car the way I wanted with the help of my son Chris. It’s the first car we restored together,” he said.

The car was white with a green interior when Boroff purchased it. Now it has a sportier deep black exterior with a gray interior. The SS emblem is back home in the center of the car’s front grill and the vinyl bucket seats come with a floor console.

Under the hood, Boroff put in an original small block Chevy 283 engine that he notes is “balanced and blue-printed.”

Despite the Chevelle’s popularity among car enthusiasts, however, the model had a short life span for Chevrolet. It rolled off the assembly line in Flint, Michigan, from 1964 to 1977. Along with the Impala and the Chevy II/Nova, it was General Motors’ answer to the Ford Fairlane. Like many muscle cars of the 1970s, it was shelved by the Mideast Oil Crisis and the higher fuel standards that resulted.

Boroff’s 1966 model is among the first generation of the Chevelle. That year the Chevelle’s body was totally redesigned as the SS became its own separate model. It was muscular, but not overly built.

The changes Boroff made to his car are very Chevelle-like. During its 13-year run, the Chevelle was a car you could make into whatever you wanted it to be. It evolved to fit performance and comfort as it was available in many different varieties and packages, including a two-door sports coupe, a four-door sedan and a station wagon.

One thing remains true, though. The Chevelle SS package is a favorite of those looking for a high-performance muscle car.
