LIMA — Spencerville improved to 11-1 on the season with a 64-52 boys high school basketball victory Friday night against Lima Central Catholic.

The Thunderbirds fell to 4-6. No other information was received about this game by deadline.

Freeman goes past 1,000 points

ELIDA — Addisyn Freeman surpassed 1,000 points for her varsity career during Elida’s 45-39 Tuesday night loss to Bluffton. Freeman finished the game with 10 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Elida rebounded with a 47-36 victory Thursday night against Celina with Freeman scoring 15.

Polar Bears fall twice

OBERLIN — The Ohio Northern women’s swimming and diving team fell to No. 1-ranked Kenyon and Oberlin in a tri-meet at Oberlin’s Carr Pool on Friday night.

The Polar Bears (1-3 overall) were downed 194-61 by Kenyon and 167-102 by Oberlin.

Senior Shelby Starkey (Bellefontaine) and sophomores Hannah Eversole (Cincinnati/Mount Notre Dame) and Mara Brown (Fremont/Ross) each had second place finishes to lead ONU.

Starkey was second in the 200 back in 2:14.55, Eversole was second in the 200 fly in 2:27.13 and Brown was second in the 100 fly in 1:01.65.

Starkey also had a third place finish in the 100 back in 1:01.83. Brown added a pair of fourth place finishes in the 100 breast (1:11.56) and the 200 I.M. (2:18.23).

Eversole was also fifth in the 500 free in 5:45.83.

Senior Abby Schauer (Beavercreek) was fourth in the 200 breast in 2:44.69.

Senior Gabbie Grant (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) and junior Katie Bend (Carmel, Ind.) also had fifth place finishes.

Grant was fifth in the 1000 free in 11:48.55 and Bend was fifth in the 200 free in 2:08.32.

Men’s swimming

ONU goes 1-1

OBERLIN — The Ohio Northern men’s swimming and diving team split a tri-meet at Oberlin with No. 2-ranked Kenyon and at Oberlin’s Carr Pool on Friday night.

The Polar Bears (2-2 overall) defeated Oberlin 164-124 and fell to Kenyon 189-91.

Sophomores Brady Horgan (New Richmond/McNicholas) and Holden Cubberley (Celina) led Ohio Northern.

Horgan won the 50 free in :21.91 and Cubberley finished first of two in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events.

Freshmen Long Huynh (Billings, Mt./West), Tyler Edmonds (Youngsville, La./Southside) and Carter Detweiler (Newton, Pa./Council Rock) each had second place finishes.

Huynh was second in the 200 fly in 2:00.10, Edmonds was second in the 200 I.M. in 2:04.44 and Detweiler was second in the 200 free in 1:47.21.

Senior Jackson Stanley (Beavercreek) and freshman Nathan Clark (Cleves/Elder) each had third place finishes, as Stanley was third in the 100 fly in :52.80 and Clark was third in the 100 free in :49.07.

Wrestling

Hardick gets 100th win

ADA — Senior Jordan Hardrick (Dayton/Wayne) became the 18th member of ONU’s 100-Win Club, leading the No. 13-ranked Ohio Northern wrestling team to a 3-0 record on the first day of the Lycoming (Pa.) Duals at Lamade Gymnasium on Friday.

The Polar Bears (16-0 overall) opened the tournament with a 46-0 victory over Penn College, recording their third consecutive shutout. Northern then defeated host Lycoming 30-13 and Springfield (Mass.) 31-15 to win Pool C with a 3-0 mark.

As victors of Pool C, ONU advances to the semifinals on Saturday, where they will battle No. 8 Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 10:30 am.

Ohio Northern will then wrap up the tournament at 1:30 pm against either No. 6 Stevens (N.J.) or No. 21 Ithaca (N.Y.) in either the championship or third place match.

Hardrick picked up his 100th career win with an 8-4 decision against Penn College. He finished the day 3-0, is now 27-3 on the season and is 102-40 in his five-year career.

In the second match of the day, Northern won seven of the first eight weight classes to jump to a 30-6 lead over Lycoming.

The Polar Bears trailed Springfield 15-9 midway through the bout. But Hardrick won by major decision at 165 and sophomore Adam Myers (Springfield/Shawnee) won by decision at 174 and Northern led 16-15.

Sophomore Gavin Layman (Chesterton, Ind.) got a decision at 184 to make it 19-15 and senior Ben DePrest (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier) and junior Jadon Brownlee (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) had pins at 197 and 285 to seal the victory.

No. 2-ranked sophomore All-American Jacob Reed (Lancaster) and No. 10-ranked senior Chase Sumner (Ada) joined Hardrick, Myers and Layman with 3-0 records on the day.

Reed improved to 29-0 with a pin and a major decision and Sumner moved to 27-1 with two pins and a decision. Sumner now leads the team with 14 pins on the season.
