Boys basketball: Lima Senior uses balanced attack to defeat Fremont Ross

LIMA — On its way to a 71-43 boys basketball win over Fremont Ross on Tuesday night, Lima Senior led by 10 points at halftime and 22 points after three quarters.

There was no let up. And there was not much Fremont Ross could do about it.

Je’Kel Cotton scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Spartans (5-3, 3-3 Three Rivers Athletic Conference).

Amarion Glenn, with 10 points, was the only other Lima Senior player to score in double figures. But five other Spartans – Jagger Hutchins, Amari Eddy, Isaiah Wilson, Anthony Mosley and Brandon Moore scored between seven and nine points.

“I think that’s when we’re most effective. That’s when we’re hard to scout and hard to guard when we’re moving the ball, sharing the ball and giving everybody an opportunity to have a piece of the pie,” Lima Senior coach Quincey Simpson said.

“When they buy into that it makes us a better basketball team,” he said.

Ayden Carder scored 17 points and Anthony Vann scored 10 points, eight of them in the first quarter, for Fremont Ross (4-7, 1-5 TRAC).

Lima Senior shot 53 percent on field goals (30 of 57) and had a 34-26 rebounding edge. Fremont Ross connected on 6 of 10 shots in the first quarter but was 2 of 13, 4 of 16 and 2 of 8 shooting in the final three quarters.

“Defending and rebounding — if we win those two battles, I like our chances,” Simpson said.

“I thought we did a good job as the game went on. We were moving the ball. We were attacking the glass, finding shooters. We did a much better job of that,” he said.

“I think we did a better job of trusting each other, of not trying to put our foot on the gas too much. I thought everybody did a good job of creating plays for other people. The last couple of games we’ve been good at creating for ourselves but in order to be a good basketball team we’ve got to be able to create plays for others and I thought we did that tonight.”

The Spartans, who came into the game on a two-game losing streak, hit 9 of 13 shots in the first quarter but couldn’t pull away from Fremont Ross.

After the Little Giants tied the game at 21-21 in the opening minute of the second quarter, Lima Senior got four quick hoops on an inside shot by Mosley, an offensive rebound by Mosley, a dunk by Mosley on a lob and a breakaway by to take a 29-21 lead three minutes into the quarter.

During that three minute stretch Ross missed seven shots in a row, which also contributed significantly to the Spartans’ 10-point halftime lead. Lima Senior scored the first six points of the second half and never led by fewer than 14 points in the final two quarters.
