Annual Jefferson Awards accepting nominations

LIMA — Community members who give of their time, effort and talents are receiving a public honor and thank you.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2023 Jefferson Awards for Public Service. The awards recognize eight adults and four youths under the age of 18 who exemplify a heart of giving in the community.

“Since being involved with the Jefferson Awards, I am always amazed at the hidden gems in our communities – people who volunteer their time and talent expecting nothing in return,” said Erin Hardesty, CEO of the United Way of Greater Lima in a recent press release. “These are individuals we hope to recognize – those that have gone above and beyond for others.”

On March 28th, a ceremony will be held locally recognizing the 12 individuals. At the ceremony, the volunteer chosen to attend the national ceremony will be announced.

Chris Jackson, a previous Jefferson award recipient and 2023 chairman weighed in at the Mayor’s press conference Wednesday morning.

“Volunteerism is a big thing in our area,” said Jackson. “I have been doing it my whole life. We are looking for people in our community who do a lot. There are a lot of volunteers and things that go on behind the scenes.”

Of the 12 who will be honored, one will have the opportunity to receive recognition at the national Jefferson Awards ceremony in New York City. Award winners will receive a donation that will be awarded to a non-profit organization of their choosing.

According to Jackson, the adult recipients will receive a $350 donation which is sponsored by Alberta Lee each year. The youth recipients will receive a $250 donation which is sponsored by Ed and Sandra Monfort.

Jackson added they are simply looking for volunteers in the Northwest Ohio area to recognize. The awards are open to nominations from Allen, Putnam, Auglaize, Van Wert, Hardin and Hancock counties.

Nominations will be accepted until Wednesday, Feb. 22. Nomination forms can be found online at unitedwaylima.org or in person at United Way located at 616 S. Collett St.
