Rock musicians, LSO to team up for NYE Fleetwood Mac show

LIMA — The Lima Symphony Orchestra’s New Year’s Eve Performance will be significantly different this year than in years past.

Although Jeans ’n Classics will once again share the stage with the orchestra, the concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Veterans Memorial Civic Center, will be focused on the music of Fleetwood Mac.

“We always like to ring in the new year with something that is a little off the beaten path,” said LSO Executive Director Elizabeth Brown-Ellis. “This is the time of the year that we really highlight the pops and do an entire concert dedicated to it and typically, to the music of one very influential band or artist and this year we are doing the music of Fleetwood Mac.”

Given the passing of Fleetwood Mac member Christine McVie on Nov. 30, the concert is sure to take on a special feel.

“I just think that Fleetwood Mac is one of those bands that were formed in the ’60s and get rediscovered and become more and more relevant constantly,” said Brown-Ellis. “And I think now that Christine sadly passed, this is another one of those times where their music is being played again a bit more frequently. And everyone is remembering all of that incredible repertoire that they know and love and all of those emotions that they had when they first discovered their music.”

“It’s going to be very special in this case, given that Christine McVie just died a couple of weeks ago,” said Peter Brennan, the arranger for Jeans ’n Classics. “So when we do songs that people would associate with her, they won’t feel sad or really bittersweet. It will just feel very, very special. It’s not that we knew her personally, but all musicians sort of felt the jolt if you will, when she died, and so it’ll be a special pleasure to do those songs that are really associated with her within Fleetwood Mac.”

And it will not be the first time that Jeans ’n Classics is bringing its brand of orchestra-centered rock performance, including six musicians to sing, as well as music from guitar, bass and drums, to Lima for New Year’s Eve.

“They are beloved by our audience and performers,” said Brown-Ellis. “We just enjoy performing with them so much and they’re bringing in all of their professionals. We normally don’t appear with drum kits and bass guitars, but they’re very talented and they add another dimension to the concert.”

“We always have a lovely time,” said Brennan. “They treat us like kings and queens and they’re a lovely orchestra to work with.”
