Despite cold, WOFB warms spirits with meals

LIMA — Volunteers congregated at the West Ohio Food Bank to help distribute ready to heat Christmas eve dinners. It was the second year in a row that the dinners were distributed on Christmas Eve.

There were a number of volunteers representing various groups along with some individuals including Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Volunteers would step out into the cold when a car pulled into the drive for food. They would gleefully interact with the customer, loading the food in the trunk or the back seat, but when finished with their task they would scurry back into the warmth of a storage space, out of the wind and near the heaters that were brought in to combat the extreme cold.

WOFB CEO Tommie Harner bundled up to work with the volunteers. Harner was pleased with the help that showed early in the morning. “We advertised that we needed volunteers. We weren’t expecting the arctic weather to come through, but we’re very excited how many volunteers came out.”

Tammy Gould, who was helping load vehicles with a group from Coleman Health Services, said, “We are here to feed the people that need fed and to give a Christmas spirit handout.”

Friday, between 1400 to 1500 meals were packed. They were to be distributed to people who were able to drive to the West Ohio Food Bank while some were delivered to individual addresses and some were taken to some senior complexes. High prices of food and the high prices of utilities continues to put people of our community in a position of hardship.
