Bluffton product signs with University of Charleston

HIGH SCHOOL

College signing

Bluffton High School Senior Erik Nygaard signed a letter of intent to run track and field and cross country at the University of Charleston, West Virginia. Nygaard is the son of Jamie and Christian Nygaard.

Nygaard is a three-time state qualifier in cross country, and finished fourth this past season at the Division III State Cross Country meet. Nygaard was a member of the 2021 4×800 relay team that finished eighth at the state track meet and was also a member of the 2022 4×800 relay team that finished third at the state track Meet.Nygaard is also Bluffton’s school record holder in the 3,200m run with a time of 9:48.23. Nygaard plans to major in exercise science at the University of Charleston, and will participate on the track and crosscountry teams.

MOHAWK — Hardin Northern’s Lucas Wilson scored 24 points and Zeb Wilson added 10 points.

UNOH 65, Goshen 63

The University of Northwestern Ohio’s Jada Haines scored 23 points and Ana Montera Sanz added 13. Mar Marata Crespo chipped in 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Soccer

ONU players honored

ADA — Six student-athletes represented the Ohio Northern women’s soccer team on the annual Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association All-Ohio and Academic All-Ohio teams for the 2022 season.

Junior defender Kylie Cabana (Dexter, Mich.), senior goalkeeper Becky Moss (Lebanon, Mount Notre Dame), junior forward Jill Roberts (Bellbrook/Carroll) and sophomore midfielder Alyssa Beckett (Monroe) were each named to the All-Ohio First Team.

Cabana, Moss and Roberts were also selected to the Academic All-Ohio First Team.

Junior defender Bri Straus (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) and senior midfielder Kylie Brown (Jamestown, N.Y./Southwestern Central) were named to the Academic All-Ohio Second Team.

The Polar Bears finished the 2022 season 14-2-5 overall and were OAC regular season co-champions with Capital, posting a 7-0-2 mark in conference play. They won their second straight OAC Tournament championship to clinch an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, where they advanced to the second round for the second consecutive year.

Men’s players recognized

ADA — Three student-athletes represented the Ohio Northern men’s soccer team on the annual Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association All-Ohio and Academic All-Ohio teams for the 2022 season.

Fifth-year senior midfielder Levi King (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) was named to the All-Ohio First Team and Academic All-Ohio First Team.

Fifth-year senior forward Bryan Kern (Rocky River) was an All-Ohio Second Team selection, and junior midfielder Cade Winchester (Knoxville, Tenn./Alcoa) was named to the Academic All-Ohio Second Team.

The Polar Bears finished the 2022 season 13-4-5 overall and won the OAC regular season championship with an 8-0-1 mark in conference play. They earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the third round before falling to Williams (Mass.).
