Lima City Schools to build veterans memorial: Names being collected; donations requested

LIMA — “Build it and they will come,” is the mantra of the Lima City Schools district as it announces that it will build a Veterans Wall of Honor at Lima Senior High School.

The Lima City Schools has kicked off its campaign to finance the wall and collect the deserving names that will be displayed on the wall.

“Our hope is that this wall will also remind our current students of the sacrifices made by so many graduates who came before them,” said Superintendent Jill Ackerman.

Ackerman was joined by The Allen County Veterans Service Commission, The Lima City Schools Foundation, and Johns Memorials.

Active duty veterans or family members need to complete a form to be recognized by the memorial. Family members are encouraged to submit names of veteran alumni. Working with the Lima City School Foundation, the district has launched a campaign to secure the funds for the project. Initially, the goal is to raise $75,000. Corporate donations as well as donations of any size are welcome. A donation of $5,000 will be recognized on a plaque in Lima Senior High School.

The memorial will be a black granite wall that will stand six and a half feet tall. It will be two-sided. The names of the graduates, their branch of service, and their year of graduation will be inscribed on the wall. The wall will honor those graduates of Central, South, and Lima Senior High Schools. At this time, 130 names have been submitted. However, there are more than 130 veterans who graduated from Lima high schools.

For questions about having a name placed on the wall, contact Patrick Horstman at 419-996-3486 or email [email protected]. Donations can be sent to Lima City School, C/O Beth Jokinen, 755 St. Johns Avenue, Lima, OH, 45805. Checks should be made out to the Lima City Schools Foundation. A digital registration can be found at www.limacityschools.org under the “Community” tab and then find “Veterans Wall of Honor.”
