This week’s updates on the coronavirus pandemic

Novavax eligibility extended to kids 12+

• Some children 12 years and older may now receive the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine, a protein-based vaccine that uses similar technology as vaccines for the flu, shingles and whooping cough. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday approved the two-dose vaccine series for emergency use in children 12 and older who have not received a COVID-19 vaccine.

Novavax, which was previously only available for adults, is not yet authorized as a booster shot.

• Residents in Allen, Auglaize and Hardin counties continue to be at high risk of exposure to COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC this week lowered Van Wert County’s risk level to medium; Putnam County’s risk level remains medium.

There were an estimated 10.3 new hospital admissions per 100,000 people in Allen County in the last seven days, a decline from the previous week. Patients with COVID-19 illness occupied 2.8% of staffed hospital beds.

• There were no additional deaths attributed to COVID-19 reported to the Ohio Department of Health in the last seven days.
