Delphos Schools to seek income tax

DELPHOS — The Delphos City Schools Board of Education approved placing a 0.5% income tax on the March 17, 2020, ballot.

The school board met for a half hour Friday night for a special meeting to discuss the proposed tax. The vote was unanimous, 4-0.

The board is concerned about the impact of voucher payments to students grades nine through 12 who may attend non-public schools next year.

There are 176 potential students eligible for the vouchers in St. John’s schools, which could reduce school funding by as much as $1,056,000.

Doug Westrick, Delphos City Schools superintendent, said the board understands there are likely to be changes in the EdChoice program. He said the district will monitor those closely to make sure it is being good stewards of the community’s money.

Board President Erica Pimpas said she supported the 0.5% tax.

“We need the money and I feel confident our legislators will amend the state budget and 1.0% percent is too much to ask for,” Pimpas said.

In other business the board approved the resignation of Delphos women’s basketball coach Christine Billiter effective immediately. The coach resigned to spend more time with family. Westrick thanked her for her service and wished her luck.

The board approved Denise Lindeman as interim head coach for the remainder of the season and the position then will be posted.
