What Devin Sanchez’s commitment means for Ohio State football

COLUMBUS — Ohio State’s 2025 class got a massive boost over the weekend when five-star cornerback Devin Sanchez committed to the Buckeyes.

Sanchez, the No. 6 overall player and No. 2 cornerback in the 247Sports composite rankings, was the fifth member of Ohio State’s 2025 class. And more importantly, he continues the string of dominance displayed by cornerbacks coach Tim Walton and Ohio State’s recruiting in the defensive secondary.

Sanchez’s ability speaks for itself, and that’s the reason why the Buckeyes were so thrilled to pull in a player of his caliber.

At 6-foot-2, he’s got elite length at the corner spot. His parents were both college athletes (his mother was a sprinter and father was a football player), and Sanchez is indeed a track athlete himself. In terms of additions on the outside of the secondary, it’s hard to find someone who has the physical attributes he does.

Not only that, he plays for North Shore High School in Houston, Texas. North Shore was the state runner-up in one of the most competitive levels of high school football in the nation. In terms of ability to step in and make an impact, Sanchez certainly would be able to do so.

But Sanchez’s addition was the latest and loudest exclamation point of Ohio State’s cornerback recruiting over the last few years.

In the 2023 class, Ohio State earned commitments from Jermaine Mathews Jr. (No. 51 overall), and Calvin Simpson-Hunt (No. 62 overall). In 2024, the Buckeyes have signed Aaron Scott (No. 34) and Bryce West (No. 58). And also in the 2025 class to go along with Sanchez they have a commitment from Blake Woodby (No. 76 overall).

Ohio State remains involved with five-star cornerback Dorian Brew, a former Ohio-product, too.

Meaning, Sanchez is the sixth top-100 recruit to commit to Ohio State at cornerback in the last three years, adding to an already talented room that played remarkably well in the 2023 season. That doesn’t include the current roster, which includes starting cornerbacks Davison Igbinosun and Denzel Burke.

And Sanchez is the highest-rated recruit of the bunch.

Ohio State’s class currently ranks eighth in the 2025 team rankings, but the Buckeyes have just five recruits in the class. Three are top 100 recruits, and two are defensive players. The other is quarterback Tavien St. Clair, who ranks as the No. 48 overall player in the 2025 class. Sanchez, by virtue of the premier position he plays and his ranking, is now the headliner on the defensive side of the ball.

So while adding Sanchez to the class, on the field, is a massive gain, what he represents off the field is just as big for the Buckeyes have done in recruiting, and where they’re trying to go.
