Roundup: New Bremen, St. Henry advance to volleyball state semifinals

CLAYTON — New Bremen claimed a Division IV volleyball championship with a 25-15, 25-21, 15-25, 26-24 win Saturday against Fort Loramie at Northmont.

The Cardinals will play Sarahsville Shenandoah in a 4 p.m. Friday state semifinal against Sarahsville Shenandoah at Wright State University’s Nutter Center.

St. Henry 3, Huron 0

FINDLAY — The Redskins reached the Division III volleyball state semifinals with a 25-23, 25-19, 25-18 victory against Huron at Liberty-Benton.

St. Henry will play Mentor Lake Catholic at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wright State University’s Nutter Center.

Ohio Northern 49, Otterbein 6

ADA — Ohio Northern rushed for 296 yards and five touchdowns and got a pick-6 from the defense to post an Ohio Athletic Conference victory against Otterbein on Senior Day at Dial-Roberson Stadium.

Ohio Northern’s offense ground out a season-high 296 yards in the contest.

Freshman Jordan Pettaway led ONU with a career-high 148 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries.

Sophomore Louis Blasiole had a career-best 135 yards and two scores.

Junior Brennon Norris hit senior Hunter Kesler on a 6-yard touchdown pass. Sophomore Cooper Braden returned an interception for another score.

BLUFFTON — Xavier Reyero, who had a touchdown run, completed 18 of 34 pass attempts for 326 yards with TD throws to CJ Thompson, who had three catches for 121 yards, Niegel Payne, who had five receptions for 109 yards and Ethan Beringer for Bluffton.

Ohio Northern 3, Otterbein 1

WESTERVILLE — Second-seeded Ohio Northern defeated top-seeded Otterbein 3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament finals to clinch the program’s eighth OAC Tournament championship and first since 2015. The victory earned the Polar Bears an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Polar Bears opened the scoring 12:38 into the game on a goal from senior Will Shaffer assisted by freshman Colin Gottron.

Junior Noah Zebrak put ONU up 2-0 with a goal in the 36th minute assisted by juniors Nolan Schirmer and Stephen Duggan.

The Polar Bears led 2-0 at halftime and made it a 3-0 edge in the 75th minute with a goal from senior Cade Winchester assisted by sophomore Alex Shaffer.

The Cardinals denied ONU a shutout with a goal from Carter Ely in the 83rd minute.

Junior Lucas Hickey played all 90 minutes in goal for ONU and recorded four saves.
