High school roundup: Shawnee’s Patel, LCC duo win girls tennis sectional titles

LIMA — Shawnee singles player Ava Patel and the Lima Central Catholic doubles team of Libby Simmons and Claire Janowski won Division II sectional titles Saturday at the University of Northwestern Ohio.

Patel defeated Bath’s Anne Oliver 7-5, 6-1 in the championship match after defeating Van Wert’s Mandy Burenga 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals. Oliver topped Shawnee’s Rose Kottapalli 6-4, 6-4 in the other semifinal.

Kottapalli defeated Burenga 6-3, 6-4 for third place.

Simmons and Janowski topped Ottawa-Glandorf”s Maggie Schmiedebusch and Megan Welch 6-0, 6-0 in the doubles final. The LCC duo defeated Celina’s Elise Muether and Isabelle Thobe 6-1, 6-2 and Schmiedebusch and Welch triumphed 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 7-5 against Shawnee’s Jenova DeBrosse and Brailynn Murphy in the semifinals.

DeBrosse and Murphy won the third place match 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

All the semifinalists qualified for the district scheduled for Oct. 11 and 14 at Port Clinton High School.

Division I sectional

FINDLAY — The Wapak doubles team of Brooke Minnig and Elisabeth Good finished third with a 6-2, 6-0 against Findlay’s Katelyn Stechschulte and Jocelyn Barberree after falling 6-3, 6-1 to Perrysburg’s Brianna Dunham and Madison Watkins in the semifinals.

Wapak singles player Kierra Siefring fell 6-0, 6-0 to Perrysburg’s Allison Barry in the semifinals and dropped the third-place match 6-2, 6-2 to Perrysburg’s Eeman Hashem.

COLDWATER — Columbus Grove won the boys championship with 101 points with Van Wert (130), Lincolnview (135), Versailles (147), Bryan (152), Shawnee 204, Minster 218, Tinora (251), Marion Local (261) and Holgate (261) also finishing in the top 10.

Columbus Grove’s Luke Ellerbrock was the race winner with Van Wert’s Owen Scott, Fort Recovery’s Trevor Heitkamp and Shawnee’s Noah Williams finishing second through fourth. Lincolnview’s Conner Baldauf (seven), Grove’s Evan Pitts (eighth) and Coldwater’s Mason Ayers (10th) also finished in the top 10.

Fort Loramie (78) won the girls team title with Lincolnview (129), Parkway (176), Fort Recovery (180) and Shawnee (273) finishing fourth through seventh. St. Henry and Van Wert were ninth and 10th respectively.

Liberty Center’s MaKayla Meller was the race winner. Lincolnview’s Brynleigh Moody was fourth and teammate Ava Milligan was 10th. Fort Recovery’s Natalie Brunswick and Shawnee’s Jenna Stump were seventh and eighth respectively.

ANNA — New Bremen (142 points) was third behind boys team champ Bellefontaine (70) with Bath (236) and Wapakoneta (257) finishing ninth and 10th respectively.

New Bremen’s Zach Wiedeman was second behind race winner Asher Long from Covington. Bath’s Jacob Wireman (fourth), Wapak’s Axton Fosnaugh (sixth) and New Bremen’s Dominic Schroyer (eighth) also finished in the top 10.

New Bremen (189) was sixth and Wapakoneta (217) finished eighth behind girls team winner Lakota West (71).

Wapak’s Kenzie Schneider was 10th behind race winner Evelyn Prodoehl from Lakota West.

ANTWERP — Miller City’s Andrea Pfau won the girls race with teammate Anna Lammers 10th. Miller City did not have enough runners for a team total.

Leipsic (107 points) finished fourth in the boys standings behind team champ Sherwood Fairview (27). Miller City’s Calvin Miller was seventh behind race winner Kyle Rabe from Fairview.
