Roundup: Elida wins Cougar Classic girls tennis event

VAN WERT — Elida won Saturday’s Cougar Classic girls tennis competition with 31 points. Wauseon and Van Wert tied for second (27 points each) followed by St. Marys (24), Lehman Catholic (15) and Ayersville (11).

Emma Stauffer (first singles), Julia Korzan (second singles), Abby Campbell (third singles), Mia Long and Ellen Troyer (first doubles) each finished second and Saige Bullock and Katelyn Mack (second doubles) were fourth for Elida.

Van Wert’s Mandy Burenga (first singles) and Sophie Gearhart (second singles) won their divisions and teammate Carolina Zappa was third in third singles. Kelta Cowan/Lilie Mull (first doubles) and Alisah Sheckels/Bristol Wollett (second doubles) dropped their two matches also for the Cougars.

For St. Marys, Sophie James placed fifth at first singles, Chloe Gibson was third at second singles, Kadence MacLean was first at third singles, Peyton Wilson and Lily Hernandez were fourth at first doubles, and Amy Hertenstein and Kelly Imwalle were third at second doubles.

Grant Duncan, Carson Staugler, Wyatt Chapman, Austin Loughridge and Jake Knapke each had a goal and Karsyn Smalley, Caleb Stephenson, Knapke, Max Baumstark and Wyatt Chapman each had an assist. Brady Steinbrunner had a pair of saves in securing the shutout in goal.

Braxton Stegbauer had the match’s only goal off an assist by Hunter Varner. Teammate Jayden Pitney made eight saves in goal.
