Ohio State athletics made, spent most money in 2022

COLUMBUS — Ohio State athletics both made the most money and spent the most money of any university athletic department in 2022 according to USA Today.

OSU brought in a total of about $251.6 million in revenue, while also spending about $225.7 million. Texas was second in both areas as it brought in almost $239.3 million and spent about $225.15 million. They are the only two schools to have expenses exceeding $200 million in the country.

Alabama (about $214.4 million), Michigan (about $210.7 million) and Georgia (about $203 million) rounded out the top five as the only schools that had a revenue exceeding $200 million.

In terms of its revenue, OSU made about $104.2 million in rights and licensing, the most it has made in this area since USA Today kept track of this information in 2005. It also received a program record amount in contributions, which can come directly from individuals or organizations for the operation of a school’s athletic department, with a total of almost $63.6 million, which is much higher than previous best number set back in 2020 (nearly $49.2 million).

As far as expenses are concerned, Ohio State spent the most it has on coaching and staff according to the database at almost $83.5 million. The scholarship money spent was also a program high at almost $24.6 million.
