Leipsic leaving NWC

The Leipsic School Board voted to leave the Northwest Conference and accept an invitation to return to the Blanchard Valley Conference in a special session Sunday according to the Putnam County Sentinel.

This marks the second team, Ada being the first, to leave the NWC in the past two months.

No timetable has been set for the move.

Nelson gets Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award

COLUMBUS — Lima Senior softball coach Rob Nelson is one of 26 coaches across the state to receive the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award.

The coaches associations of all sports sanctioned by the OHSAA nominate candidates for this award.

Defiance 10, Ottawa-Glandorf 1

OTTAWA — A trio of Defiance pitchers, David Jimenez, Brezlen Zipfel and Fernando Torres, combined on a three-hiiter while fanning seven and walking three. For O-G, Kaleb Yoder, Colin White and Brad Maag all had hits.

Columbus Grove 10, St. Marys 2

COLUMBUS GROVE — Columbus Grove’s Shep Halker went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs and Brock Hoffman went 2 for 3 with 2 runs and an RBI. For St. Marys, Joel Kogge went 2 for 2 with a run. and Carter Steinberg drove in a run.

Coldwater 16, Kalida 0

KALIDA — Coldwater’s Keegan Bruggeman surrendered zero runs on three hits over two innings, striking out three and walking zero. Mason Welsch and Kaup entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Kalida’s Carson Klausing was named Putnam County baseball Player of the Year and his coach, Chad Ehrnsberger, earned Coach of the Year accolades.

Joining Klausing on the first team were Shep Halker (Columbus Grove), Brock Hoffman (Columbus Grove), Bryce Gasser (Fort Jennings), Jarron Swick (Fort Jennings), Jaden Smith (Kalida), Bubba Smith (Kalida), Quin Schroeder (Leipsic), Brent Koenig (Miller City) and Isaac Stall (Pandora-Gilboa).

Making the second team were Taylor Schroeder (Columbus Grove), Kyle Hopkins (Columbus Grove), Sam Newsome (Continental), Drew Buss (Kalida), Colin Hoffman (Kalida), Jeremy Tavarez (Leipsic), Luke Spoors (Leipsic), Caleb Niese (Miller City), Carson Lehman (Miller City) and Jayden Saxton.

Columbus Grove’s Gwen Langhals was named the Putnam County League Player of the Year and Continental’s Leva Aguiree was tabbed coach of the year.
