Roundup: Columbus Grove’s Halker, New Bremen’s Kuenning throw baseball no-hitters

COLUMBUS GROVE — Winning pitcher Shep Halker allowed no hits or walks while striking out seven in five innings as Columbus Grove defeated Upper Scioto Valley 14-0 Thursday in a Division IV baseball sectional final.

Halker also finished with two hits, including a triple, and two RBI, Brock Hoffman had two hits, including a double, and an RBI and Landen Schroeder had two hits and an RBI.

FORT RECOVERY — Winning pitcher Nolan Kuenning allowed no earned runs or hits and four walks while striking out five in seven innings. He also had a hit and two RBI. J Heitkamp had a double.

Crestview 2, Parkway 1

ELIDA — Isaac Kline drove in Hunter Jones with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning of a Division IV sectional final. Kline finished with three hits and an RBI.

Carson Hunter and winning reliever Preston Kreischer combined to allow no earned runs, two hits and six walks while striking out 14 in eight innings. Teammate Bryson Penix had a hit and an RBI. Bryce Stearns and Brayden Bruns had Parkway’s hits.

Lincolnview 5,

Fort Jennings 4

MIDDLE POINT — The Lancers responded with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh after Fort Jennings had tied the D-IV sectional final at 4.

Reide Jackson, Brandon Renner and Luke Bollenbacher each had a hit and an RBI for Lincolnview. Owen Calvelage had a hit and two RBI and Jarron Swick had two hits, including a double, for Fort Jennings.

Ayersville 2, Kalida 1

KALIDA — Ayersville scored the decisive run in the ninth inning of the D-IV sectional final. Kalida’s Carson Klausing and Drew Buss combined to allow no earned runs, seven hits and seven walks while striking out 14 in nine innings. Buss also had two hits, including a double. Braylon Smith and Colin Hoffman each had two hits for Kalida.

McComb 10, Ada 0

MCCOMB — Levi Green had Ada’s hit in a D-IV sectional final.

Mohawk 13, Ridgemont 1

MOUNT VICTORY — Colten Bailey had a hit and an RBI and Xavier Stuck and Ethan Moore each had a hit for Ridgemont in a Division IV sectional final.

St. Henry’s Devin Delzeith (pitcher of the year) and Mike Gast (coach of the year) and (Coldwater)’s Braylon Harlamert (position player of the year) won top honors in the Midwest Athletic Conference.

Division I district

PORT CLINTON — The Shawnee doubles team of Mason Stahl and Mac Davis remains in the hunt for a spot at state after Thursday reaching the semifinals of the Division I boys district tennis tournament at VonThron-Hablitzel Tennis Center.

With a win during Saturday’s semis, the duo will advance as the top two singles players and doubles teams earn berths next week at The Ohio State University’s Ty Tucker Tennis Center in Columbus.

Shawnee’s Gabe Burke and Wapakoneta’s Connor Coffey Aiden Bellman and won their opening round singles matches before falling in the quarterfinals. Shawnee’s singles player Shashank Chanamolu and the doubles team of Salah Mohammed and Seth Grieshop fell in the first round.

Softball

Bath 4, Defiance 2

LIMA — Winning reliever Madi Edelbrock allowed no earned runs, five hits and a walk while striking out three in 5 2/3 innings as Bath advanced to Saturday’s noon Division II district final against Bryan, a 6-0 winner against Napoleon.

Anne Oliver had four hits, including a home run and a double, and three RBI, Claire Armentrout had three hits, including a solo home run, and Anne Oliver doubled also for the Wildkittens.

Men’s tennis

UNOH 4, Cumberlands 0

MOBILE, Ala. — The University of Northwestern Ohio advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Championship.

The doubles teams of Malik Omarkhanov and Martin Stanchev and Sergio Conde and Giovanni Branchetti won for UNOH. Conde, Branchetti and Omarkhanov also won in singles. One of the matches did not count toward the final total since the Racers had already clinched the team title which resulted in the remaining competition not being completed.

UNOH then went on to defeat Coastal Georgia 4-0 in the quarterfinals. No other information was reported about this match at deadline.

Track and field

ONU relay breaks mark

ALLIANCE — The Ohio Northern men’s 400 relay team broke the school record for the second straight week to lead the Ohio Northern men’s outdoor track and field team at the Mount Union Last Chance Meet on Wednesday and Thursday at Kehres Stadium.

The Polar Bears (27-6 overall) competed in 10 events at the meet, which was not team scored.

Seniors Vini Souza (Spencerville), Hunter Kesler (Oakwood/Paulding) and Ollie Jacobs (DeGraff/Riverside) and sophomore Jordan Dean (Euclid/Villa Angela Saint Joseph) finished second in the 4×100 relay in a school-record :40.72, breaking the previous record time of :40.82 they ran at last week’s Harrison Dillard Twilight Meet at Baldwin Wallace. That time ranks seventh nationally in NCAA Division III.
