Colleges: Lima Senior grad Jamir Simpson to play for Southern Utah

CEDAR CITY, Utah — Division I Southern Utah University has announced the addition of Lima Senior graduate Jamir Simpson, a redshirt junior who most recently played at the University of Wisconsin–Parkside.

“Jamir is a tough, physical wing that can stretch the defense and mix it up inside. He’s a very skilled scorer and a strong defender that will add some much-needed college experience to our program.” Said Jeter.

Simpson played in all 30 games for the Rangers last season and started in 29. He earned second-team all-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors on 46% from the floor and 33% from three.

He was the second leading scorer on the team, finishing the year at just under 15 points per game and led the team in total rebounds and rebounds per game at 180 and six respectively.

Simpson joins former Perry coach Clay Tucker, who has taken a position as special assistant for player development.

Jamir had three double-doubles last season. He surpassed the 20-point mark nine times with his highest-scoring game being an efficient 28-point outburst on 12-16 from the floor against Cardinal Stritch.

In the 2021-22 season, as a redshirt freshman, Simpson started all 28 games for the Rangers, was the second leading scorer on the team, averaging over 12 points per game, and led the team in rebounding with 146 total rebounds on the year.

Simpson played his first year of college basketball at the University of Pikeville where he averaged 11 points and 5.5 rebounds per game including two double-doubles and a 29-point game. He shot an impressive 57% from the floor on 183 field goal attempts.

LCC grad selected

Lima Central Catholic graduate Leiahnni Smith has been selected to play in the Aramco Team Series Pro Am in West Palm Beach, Florida, from Friday to Sunday.

Smith plays college golf for Edward Waters and competed in the 2021 Division II state tournament as a member of the champion Thunderbirds.

All-sports honors

ADA — The Ohio Northern women won the 2022-23 Ohio Athletic Conference All-Sports Trophy, while the ONU men finished third, the league office announced Monday night at the 39th annual Clyde Lamb Awards banquet at Otterbein.

The OAC awarded Levi King and Tessa Pitcovich the Clyde Lamb Award. One male and one female student-athlete from each OAC institution were chosen.

The Clyde A. Lamb Awards are named in honor of the man who organized the Department of Health and Physical Education at Ohio Northern in 1929. He served as coach, department chairman and athletics director at ONU from 1929-64.

Criteria for the award include at least two years of participation in an OAC-sponsored sport, senior status, a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and sportsmanlike conduct in a manner that has brought credit to the student- athlete and his/her institution.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The University Northwestern Ohio’s Erica Anderson has been named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Athletic Trainer of the Year.

Men’s track and field

ONU ranked No. 22

ADA — The Ohio Northern men’s outdoor track and field team is ranked No. 22 in the Week 8 USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Top 25 National Rating Index.

The Polar Bears earned 48.67 points in the ratings, moving up one spot from a No. 23 ranking last week.

Wisconsin-La Crosse is the top-rated team in the rankings, earning 177.08 points. MIT (Mass.) is second with 159.88 points, and Rowan (N.J.) is third with 140.63 points.

The rankings are compiled based on where individuals’ top marks rank nationally in their respective events.

The Polar Bears (27-6 overall) are ranked No. 3 in the Great Lakes Region by the USTFCCCA, trailing Mount Union and John Carroll.

ADA — Ohio Northern’s Tim Knapschaefer, a Marion Local graduate, Nate Webb, Corey Jeanor and Andrew Stechschulte were named 2023 Academic All-District by College Sports Communicators.

To be eligible for academic all-district honors, each student-athlete must have at least a 3.5 GPA and have played in at least 50 percent of his team’s games or pitched at least 10 innings during the season.
