Hardin Northern Invitational

DOLA — The Leipsic boys finished first with 117 points with Hardin Northern (103), Riverdale (85), Pandora-Gilboa (82) and Ada (68) also finishing among the top five.

Ada’s Jackson Brown (110 hurdles) and Julian Grose (300 hurdles), Leipsic’s Hayden Hiegel (100), Seth Apple (discus) and Payton Lammers (shot put), Upper Scioto Valley’s Joe Parker (1,600 and 3,200) and Hardin Northern’s Carter Curtis (200 and 400), Zeb Wilson (800) and Wesley Newton (pole vault) were among the individual winners.

The 400 relay team of Brody Lammers, Hiegel, Jayce Brecht and Mason Rader and the 1,600 relay team of Wilson, Riley Newton, Wesley Newton and Carter Curtis also finished first.

Riverdale (186) won the team title with Pandora-Gilboa (78), Cardington-Lincoln (55), Ada (51) and Hardin Northern (48) finishing second through fifth respectively.

Miller City’s Andrea Pfau (1,600 and 3,200) was among the individual winners.

The P-G 1,600 relay team of Ciel Wise, Savannah Knueven, Paige Ferguson and Madison Kinsinger also finished first.

Memorial Invitational

CLYDE — Ottawa-Glandorf won the girls title with 128 points with Perrysburg (110.5) and Celina (72.5) second and third respectively out of 11 teams.

O-G’s Alexa Fortman (800 and 1,600), Emma Hoffman (discus) and Lily Haselman (pole vault) and Celina’s Amelia Lutz (shot) were among the individual winners.

The O-G 3,200 relay team of Madelyn Hovest, Rose Turnwald, Anna Buddelmeyer and Corinne Closson and 1,600 relay team of Averie Fox, Closson, Turnwald and Fortman all finished first.

In the boys event, Ottawa-Glandorf and Celina tied for eighth (45 each) behind champion Oak Harbor (103.5) in the 13-team standings.

O-G’s Ty Rosengarten (3,200) was among the first-place finishers along with the 3,200 relay team of Masen Vogt, Isaac Macke, Wyatt Croy and Rosengarten.

EATON — St. Marys (124 points) finished second behind Versailles (146) in the girls competition out of 15 teams.

St. Marys Ella Jacobs (high jump) and Amelia Ankerman (long jump) were among the individual winners.

The 400 relay team of Jacobs, Syerra Greber, Darcie Liming and Ankerman also finished first.

The St. Marys boys (47.5) were eighth behind champion Richmond (99). St. Marys’ Calvin Morris won the 2,000 steeplechase.

OAC Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE — Ohio Northern broke the school’s 54-hole record by 15 strokes and remains in second place after the second day of the 2023 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships at River Greens Golf Course.

The Polar Bears (71-11 overall), who are ranked No. 27 nationally by GolfStat.com, carded a 311-326-324—961 for the first 54 holes of the 72-hole tournament.

The 961 surpassed the previous 54-hole record of 976 set at last year’s OAC Championships.

Individually, Grace Honigford broke her own 54-hole school record with a 77-79-75—231 and is tied for second out of 44 players.

The two-time defending champion will enter the final round locked into a three-way battle for medalist honors with Emma McGreal (230) and Becky Williams (231) of Otterbein.

Marisa Alfes moved up one spot into fourth place eight shots off the lead with a 76-81-81—238.

Amelia Burger moved up one place to sixth with a 78-81-81—240 and Isabella Orofino is 10th with an 80-85-89—254.

Mike Becraft Invitational

ADA — Keegan Digby broke his own school record in the shot put to lead the Ohio Northern men’s team to victory at the third annual Mike Becraft Invitational at Kerscher Stadium.

Saturday marked the second and final day of the meet, and the Polar Bears (20-4 overall) topped the nine-team field with 242 points. Adrian (Mich.) was second with 100 points, Findlay was third with 95 points and Bluffton was fourth with 68 points.

The Polar Bears won three other events on Saturday.

Breydan Hann won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:52.46, Aaron Guzman won the 1,500 in 4:02.00, and Tyrese Barker won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.43 seconds.

Bluffton’s Joey Bonham tied for first in the high jump (1.95 meters). Ottoville grad Kyle Manns won the 400 hurdles (58.32) and the 1,600 relay team of Blayden McCoy, Simon Shawk, Russell Lough and Jayden McConnell was first also for Bluffton in 3:22.05.

Digby won the shot put, breaking his own school record for the third time this season with a mark of 17.04 meters.

Northern added 11 more top-three finishes on the day.

Spencerville grad Vini Souza placed second in the 100 meters, running a personal-best time of 10.80, which is tied for 10th all-time at ONU.

In the long jump, Marion Local grad Nick Tangeman was second with a mark of 6.46 meters, and Shawnee grad Owen Schoonover was third with a mark of 6.20 meters. Tangeman added a third-place finish in the triple jump, posting a mark of 12.79 meters.

In the women’s event, Ohio Northern posted victories in five events en route to taking the team title.

The Polar Bears (21-3 overall) topped the nine-team field with 267 points. Findlay was second with 116 points, and Adrian (Mich.) was third with 69 points. Bluffton (26) was eighth.

In the field events, Anna Schatzle won the pole vault with a mark of 3.61 meters, and Lauryn Wolters won the triple jump with a mark of 10.55 meters.

On the track, Olyvia Ashbrook won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.92, and Columbus Grove grad Taylor Ellerbrock won the 5,000 in 18:27.37.

The team of Chloe Gibson, Kendra Krichbaum, Stacey Legg and Haley Cannon won the 400 relay in 50.51.

Men’s tennis

ONU 9, Mount Union 0

ALLIANCE — Ohio Northern clinched a share of the OAC regular season title.

The Polar Bears end the regular season 11-7 overall and 5-1 in OAC play, while the Purple Raiders fall to 2-7 (2-3 OAC).

Northern’s victory, coupled with John Carroll’s victory against Otterbein, put ONU and JCU at 5-1 in OAC play. Otterbein is 4-1 and will play at Mount Union today with a chance to join ONU and JCU as league champions.

Northern swept the three doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead.

Sam Sran and T.J. Schultz won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, Peyton Specht and Drew Swisher won 8-2 at No. 2 and Tristan Munteanu and junior Kavya Desai won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

The Polar Bears then won all six singles matches to complete the 9-0 victory.

Munteanu won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1, Sran won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2, Specht won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, Desai won 6-3, 6-7, 7-2 at No. 4, Nico Rogel won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and Schultz won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

Women’s tennis

ONU 9, Mount Union 0

ALLIANCE — Ohio Northern wrapped up its regular season.

The Polar Bears improve to 15-4 overall and finish second in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings with a 6-1 record. The Purple Raiders fall to 3-8 (3-4 OAC).

Ohio Northern won all six courts that were contested as UMU played with only four players, forfeiting at Nos. 5 and 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Jenna Bell went 2-0 to lead ONU.

Bell joined with Abby Cruser to win 8-4 at No. 1 doubles and Jamie Hurst and Julianne Sheldon won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.

In singles action, Bell won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, Regan Landis won 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 at No. 2, Lima Central Catholic grad Olivia Kesner won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and Katie O’Connell won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.

Men’s lacrosse

COLUMBUS — Riley O’Neal and junior Aidan Dempsey scored two goals apiece to lead Ohio Northern at Bernlohr Stadium.

The Polar Bears fall to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while the Comets improve to 11-4 (6-2 OAC).

Women’s lacrosse

Capital 24, ONU 9

ADA — Ohio Northern (8-7 overall, 2-4 OAC) wrapped up the home portion of its schedule at Dial-Roberson Stadium against Capital (8-4, 6-1 OAC).

Keaghan Burden had a hat trick with three goals and Elena Martin added two goals for ONU.
