Roundup: Thaxton has two homers in Allen East softball win

MILLER CITY — Allen East’s Nikki Thaxton homered twice as the Mustangs defeated Miller City 8-2 in high school softball Friday.

Thaxton also had a double and four RBI and winning pitcher Maggie Wanamaker had three hits and an RBI. Wanamaker went seven innings, allowing six hits and two walks while striking out eight. Samantha DeMuth had two hits, including a double, for Miller City.

MILLER CITY — Donovan Kennedy had three hits and four RBI, Jackson Thompson had three hits and three RBI, Jacob Hershberger had three hits and an RBI and Braylen Kennedy had four hits for Allen East. Ethan Barlage and CJ Lehman each had two hits and an RBI for Miller City.

LIMA — Marshall Jordan had a hit and two RBI for Lima Senior.

Winning pitcher James Nelson, Jack Sailer and Johnny Heitkamp combined to allow two hits and a walk while striking out eight in five innings. Ben Sailer had four hits and an RBI, Nolan Kuenning had two hits, including a home run, and three RBI, Jack Sailer had a hit and three RBI, Brady Keller had two hits, including a double, and two RBI and Carson Keller had two hits and three RBI.

ONU sweeps

ADA — Ashley Lenser and Allie Bican pitched Ohio Northern to a doubleheader sweep of Muskingum at the ONU Softball Field.

The Polar Bears won 3-2 in Game 1 and added a 4-2 victory in Game 2 to improve to 12-10 overall and 3-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while dropping the Muskies to 17-7 (4-2 OAC).

Lenser earned the win in Game 1, improving to 7-4 on the season after pitching all seven innings and giving up one earned run on five hits and one walk to go with two strikeouts.

In a complete-game outing in Game 2, Bican allowed one earned run on six hits and two walks while striking out four to improve to 5-6.

Baseball

Polar Bears win 2

NEW CONCORD — Ohio Northern showcased its offensive firepower, pounding out 28 hits in an 11-4, 8-3 doubleheader sweep of Muskingum at Mose Morehead Field.

The Polar Bears improve to 15-9 overall and 3-3 in the OAC while dropping the Muskies to 12-8 (2-4 OAC).

Corey McMann tallied a home run and a pair of doubles in a five-hit day, becoming ONU’s all-time leader in career doubles with 47. The old mark of 46 was shared by Luke Klinehoffer (2016-2019) and Scott Bush (1998-2001). McMann finished with three RBI on the day.

Chase Armstrong was also a major part of the offensive explosion, finishing with a combined seven hits, including two home runs and two doubles, to go with five RBI.

Bluffton 7, Earlham 6

BLUFFTON — Bluffton rallied four times for a victory in 12 innings. The Beavers improved to 12-8 with a 6-1 mark in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Earlham dipped to 14-8 overall and 4-3 in the HCAC.

Jake Baumgartner drove in three runs on three hits and Kenny Schneider added two RBI on two hits for Bluffton.

Women’s lacrosse

Marietta 14, ONU 13 (OT)

ADA — Meredith Miller became Ohio Northern’s all-time career goal scoring leader, but Marietta spoiled the celebration with a overtime victory at Dial-Roberson Stadium.

The Polar Bears fall to 6-6 overall and are 0-3 in the OAC, while the Pioneers improve to 7-4 (1-1 OAC).

Miller scored five goals in the contest, giving her 101 for her career. She broke the previous record of 99 set by Maddie Storr from 2016-20.

She also recorded her 15th career hat trick, tying her for third all-time in ONU history in that category.
