ADA — Corey McMann smacked his 15th career home run to lead Ohio Northern against Bluffton at Wander Field.

The Polar Bears improve to 13-9 on the season, while the Beavers fall to 11-8.

Northern took a quick 2-0 lead in the home half of the first on RBI hits by senior Jacob Wenning (Coldwater) and senior Nate Webb.

Sam Harrison scored on a squeeze bunt by sophomore Elliott Veenstra in the bottom of the second to up the lead to 3-0.

Logan Stevens singled home Andrew Stechschulte in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-1 ONU.

Webb’s 2-run bomb in the home half of the sixth increased the lead to 6-1.

But Bluffton’s Ayden Spriggs would hit a 2-run home run in the top of the seventh and a solo shot in the top of the ninth to get BU within 6-4.

But Vaughn Duncan would close the door on the Beavers and pick up his league-leading seventh save of the season.

Sophomore Blake Altaffer went 7.0 innings, allowing five hits and only two earned runs to pick up the win and improve to 3-0 on the season.

ONU splits DH

ADA — Kaylie Griffin and sophomore Ashley Lenser helped lead the Ohio Northern to a doubleheader split with Baldwin Wallace at the ONU Softball Field.

The Polar Bears (10-10 overall, 1-3 OAC) got a 3-1 victory in Game 1 before falling 8-2 to the Yellow Jackets (11-9 overall, 3-1 OAC) in Game 2.

Griffin had two of Northern’s six hits in the opener, tallying a double and home run to go with two RBIs.

Lenser pitched all seven innings, giving up just one unearned run on four hits and three walks to go with one strikeout.

The Polar Bears got on the scoreboard early, as Griffin hit a two-out RBI double that plated Lauren Walls in the bottom of the first inning.

A two-out triple from Annika Murray brought senior Sydney Motylinski home for a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

BWU’s Bridie Bricker drew a bases-loaded walk to get the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth frame, but Griffin answered with a solo homer to center field to stretch the ONU lead to 3-1 in the fifth.

Lenser retired the BWU batters quickly over the final two innings, getting a 1-2-3 sixth and facing just four batters in the seventh after the leadoff hitter reached base on an error.

Lenser is now 6-4 on the season.

Yellow Jacket pitchers Hannah Welling and Marisa Hall quieted the ONU offense in Game 2, combining to allow just one hit.

The BWU offense, meanwhile, tallied nine hits and scored eight runs courtesy of outbursts in the third and fifth frames.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring with a four-run third inning, getting a 2-RBI double from Lexy Coggins and RBI doubles from Bricker and Sara Frederickson.

BWU added four more runs in the fifth, increasing its lead to 8-0.

Northern got on the scoreboard via an RBI single from Walls that plated Callie Rosser in the bottom of the fifth.

The Polar Bears capped the scoring on a sacrifice fly from Murray that brought freshman Allie Wilson (Wapakoneta) home in the sixth.

Bluffton-Oberlin split

BLUFFTON — Bluffton University split a pair of non-conference games with Oberlin. Bluffton moved to 11-11 on the season following its first home doubleheader in nearly three weeks.

The visitors scored three in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the seventh on the way to a 6-0 lead. Riley Hammonds broke up the shutout with an RBI single that plated senior Sammi Urban, but that was all the offense Bluffton could must up in the lidlifter.

Erin Norman slipped to 6-5 after allowing six runs on eight hits in seven innings of work. The Bluffton defense let Norman down as four of the six runs were of the unearned variety. Five Bluffton hitters finished with one hit apiece in game one.

Game two was a pitching duel from start to finish with all three runs scored in the fifth inning. Oberlin went up 1-0 when the Yeowomen used a Chutko triple to score the game’s first run.

Pinch hitter Kaylei Barnett (Wapakoneta) opened the bottom of the frame with a single to shortstop. Kaylee Grant (Shawnee) followed with a base knock to right and one out later, Bobbi Adams delivered a two-run double to the wall in center field and Grace Fillinger did the rest. She retired the final six batters to help Bluffton notch a split on Tuesday.

Fillinger was both dominant and efficient in the circle and she helped herself with five assists and a putout. The standout senior scattered six hits and needed just 56 pitches (46 strikes) to secure her fifth victory of the season!

Grant went 2-for-2 with a walk and Adams drove in both Bluffton runs.
