Roundup: Ohio Northern’s Serbin, Huelsman receive top region honors

ADA — Ohio Northern senior Brynn Serbin was named the 2023 Region 7 Player of the Year as a member of the All-Region first team in women’s basketball by D3hoops.com.

ONU head coach Mark Huelsman was also recognized as the Region 7 Coach of the Year.

Student-athletes who earn All-Region honors are eligible for the D3hoops.com All-America teams.

Digby recognized

ADA — Ohio Northern junior Keegan Digby (Bowling Green/Otsego) was named an NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field All-American for 2023 by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Digby earns the recognition after placing fourth in the shot put with a mark of 16.98 meters at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala., on Saturday.

Student-athletes who finished in the top eight of their respective events and relays at the national meet earned All-America distinction.

Women’s tennis

ONU 7, Bentley 0

ORLANDO, Fla. — Ohio Northern earned its second straight victory on its spring break trip, defeating NCAA Division II Bentley (Mass.) at the USTA Courts.

The Polar Bears improve to 5-3 overall while dropping the Falcons to 3-8.

ONU won two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.

Jamie Hurst and Ada graduate Miranda Wills won 6-0 at No. 2 doubles, and Lima Central Catholic grad Cassie Stuber and Julianne Sheldon won 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.

The Polar Bears proceeded to sweep all six singles courts.

Abby Cruser won 5-7, 6-4, 10-5 at No. 1 singles, Hurst won 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 at No. 2, Jenna Bell won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, Regan Landis won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, LCC grad Olivia Kesner won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5, and Katie O’Connell won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.

ONU wins two

JAN PHYL VILLAGE, Fla. — Ohio Northern pounded out 23 base hits and scored 20 runs in victories against Benedictine (Ill.) and Westminster (Pa.) on day three of the team’s annual spring break trip.

The Polar Bears (3-3 overall) began the morning with a 15-7 victory against Benedictine, then followed with a 5-1 shutout of Westminster.

Against Benedictine, Abby Elliott finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI and four runs scored. Callie Rosser went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Allie Bican was 3-for-3 with two RBI at the plate.

Against Westminster, Ashley Lenser scattered seven hits and allowed one earned run to grab the complete-game victory to improve to 2-1 on the year. Elliott finished the day 4-for-7 at the plate with four RBI and five runs scored.

Baseball

ONU splits DH

DAVENPORT, Fla. — Ohio Northern continued its spring break schedule by splitting a pair of seven-inning games with Utica (N.Y.) at Lake Myrtle Park.

The Polar Bears (6-4 overall) won 7-3 in the second game after the Pioneers (6-2 overall) took the opener by the same score.

Joey Kennedy led Northern with a three-hit outing, including a double, to go with two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI in Game 2. Chase Armstrong had a home run and Vinny Sclafani added a pair of doubles.

Kennedy and Andrew Stechschulte notched a team-best two hits, including a double, in the opener for ONU.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Ohio Northern continued its spring break trip Tuesday morning with a loss tat the USTA Courts. The Falcons improve to 3-2 overall while dropping the Polar Bears to 4-4.
