Roundup: Ohio Northern ranked No. 16 in D3hoops.com women’s poll

ADA — The Ohio Northern women’s basketball team is ranked No. 16 in the Week 13 D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.

The Polar Bears (23-4 overall) received 252 points and rose two spots from last week’s poll in which they received 170 points and were ranked No. 18.

Christopher Newport (Va.) is the top-ranked team in this week’s poll, receiving 617 points and 18 of 25 first-place votes.

Northern is coming off winning its fifth Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament championship with Saturday’s 60-45 victory over Marietta. The Polar Bears also won the OAC Regular Season title with a 15-3 record.

As OAC Tournament champion, ONU earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament and will play host to the first two rounds Friday and Saturday. The Polar Bears face No. 25 Berea (Kentucky) in the opening round at 8 p.m. Friday.

The other first-round game in Ada, scheduled for 5:30 p.m., will see Wisconsin-Oshkosh face off against Washington & Lee (Va.).

Northern is also ranked No. 13 in this week’s Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 Poll, which was released on Tuesday.

The Polar Bears received 117 points in the poll and rose five spots from last week’s poll in which they received 73 points and were ranked No. 18.

Christopher Newport is the top-ranked team in the poll, receiving 250 points and all 10 first-place votes.

ADA — Celina graduate Holden Cubberley, Brady Horgan, Vincent Morando, Shawnee grad Charlie Spyker, Mara Brown, Morgan Fernandez, Annie Richters and Gabbie Grant were named Academic All-District by College Sports Communicators.

The 2022-23 Academic All-District teams recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances in the pool and in the classroom.

Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC All-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced in mid-March.

WAPAKONETA — Luke Beyke had 19 points and Devin Delzeith and Evan Bowers each scored 12 for the Redskins (14-11), who advanced to district championship game against Marion Local at 7 p.m. Friday at Wapakoneta.

David Homan had 21 points and Evan Eyink scored 13 for the Cardinals, who finished their season at 16-8.

LCC joins partnership

Lima Central Catholic School has entered into a partnership agreement with BSN Sports, a division of Varsity Brands and Under Armour, through its co-sponsored Women of Will (WoW) Program.

It is the first high school sponsorship program designed distinctly for women’s athletic programs.

The uniform and apparel agreement outfitting athletes and coaches in Under Armour gear will debut int the spring,

Partnership benefits include athlete leadership opportunities, social media exposure and Women of Will awards.
