ONU 67, Heidelberg 31

ADA — The No. 14 Ohio Northern women’s basketball team got scoring contributions from 11 different players in a 67-31 win over Heidelberg on Wednesday night at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears extend their current win streak to 12 games, improving to 15-1 overall and 9-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while dropping the Student Princes to 2-14, 0-9.

Senior Brynn Serbin (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) led ONU with 14 points to go with eight rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Junior Kristen Luersman (Fort Jennings) tallied 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals, and sophomore Layla Dials (Willard) added 12 points and three rebounds.

Eight other Polar Bears scored between two and six points.

Hallie Rogers led HU with 12 points.

Northern took a 12-7 lead into the second quarter and extended the edge to 27-14 on a 3-pointer from Serbin with 1:27 left in the period.

ONU led 29-16 at halftime.

The Polar Bears scored the first seven points of the third quarter, getting two points each from sophomores Brooke Allen (Woodville/Woodmore) and Abi Akamine (Lahaina, Hawaii/Lahainaluna) and a triple from Serbin for a 36-16 lead.

A 3-pointer from freshman Mackenzie Suprano (Cutler/Waterford) put ONU up 48-21 with 1:16 left in the third quarter.

The Polar Bears took a 48-22 edge into the fourth period and opened the scoring in the final quarter with an 11-0 run highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers from Dials and capped by a triple from freshman Noelle Ruane (St. Mary’s) en route to the 36-point victory.

Ohio Northern made 25-of-58 field goals for 43.1% and was 8-of-22 from 3-point range for 36.4%, while HU made 10-of-46 field goals for 21.7% and was 3-of-18 from beyond the arc for 16.7%.

ONU was 9-of-13 from the free-throw line for 69.2%, and HU was 8-of-13 for 61.5%.

Northern out-rebounded Heidelberg by a 40-32 margin and finished with 17 assists.

UNOH 70. Concordia 68

University of Northwestern Ohio’s scored 29 points and dished out 6 assists. TeammateKalea Kruser, who snared 10 rebounds, added 14 points and Mar Marata Crespo chipped in 13 points. The Racers shot 42 percent from the field and were 9 of 21 from behind the 3-point arc.

Men’s Basketball

Nebraska 63, Ohio State 60

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Sam Griesel scored 15 points — including a pair free throws in closing seconds — and grabbed seven rebounds Wednesday night to help Nebraska beat Ohio State 63-60 and extend the Buckeyes’ losing streak to five games.

Keisei Tominaga added 11 points for Nebraska (10-9, 3-5 Big Ten). Derrick Walker, Nebraska’s leading scorer (14.1 points per game) and rebounder (7.7), fouled out when he was called for a charge with 2:09 left, finished with eight points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

The Cornhuskers improved to 6-20 all-time against Ohio State (10-8, 2-5).

Brice Sensabaugh scored back-to-back buckets to give Ohio State a two-point lead with 8:55 to play but the Buckeyes went without a field goal for the next 6 1/2 minutes. Denim Dawson answered with a layup and Jamarques Lawrence followed with a 3-pointer to make it 52-49 a minute later and the Cornhuskers led the rest of the way.

Sean McNeil missed a clean look at a potential tying 3-point shot from the left wing as time expired.

Sensabaugh led the Buckeyes with 18 points and 10 rebounds. McNeil scored 13 points and Zed Key added 11 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg was called for a technical foul with 12:33 to play. He appeared upset after a no-call on what he thought was a Buckeyes foul and exploded when Wilhelm Breidenbach was called for an moving screen moments later. McNeil, who went into the game 18-for-18 from the free-throw line this season for Ohio State, missed both technical free throws.

Nebraska has played the nation’s toughest schedule according to the NCAA’s NET rankings and 10 of its 19 games this season have been against Quad 1 opponents.

Softball

ONU to build stadium

ADA — Ohio Northern University is pleased to announce it will build a new softball stadium through the generosity of lead donors Melinda (Durbin) Hileman, BA ‘87, and David Hileman, BSBA ‘86, BSPh ‘86, longtime University supporters who have contributed their knowledge and resources in numerous ways.

Stadium construction will begin at the end of the spring 2023 softball season with a dedication event planned later in the year. Among the planned features are heated dugouts, field lighting, a new scoreboard with updated technology, padded backstop, upgraded press box and permanent bleachers with bucket seating.
