Boys basketball: Lima Senior falls to Toledo St. John’s

Horrendous.

That is the way Lima Senior head coach Quincy Simpson described his team’s 44-32 loss to Toledo St. John’s Jesuit in a Three Rivers Athletic Conference affair Tuesday night.

“I honestly didn’t see one positive thing throughout that entire game and that is just being honest,” Simpson said. “There is not one aspect on offense or defense that I can build on. We are going to take this tape, watch it and move on. This effort by our team will never happen again.”

Simpson’s frustration stemmed from his team’s inability to score consistently while at the same time unable to make a defensive stop down the stretch to allow the Titans to secure the victory.

Lima Senior slips to 4-2 on the season and 2-2 in the TRAC. Toledo improves to 5-3 overall and evens its conference mark at 2-2.

Coming into the game, Lima Senior was averaging 66 points a contest but was limited to its lowest offensive showing of the year. The last time the Spartans scored in the 30s was back in the 2015-16 season when they edged St. John’s 34-31.

And while they were able to collect a win in that contest, the Spartans would have no such luck as nothing seemed to work in the Spartans’ favor.

We just didn’t play well at all,” Simpson said. “Offensively, we didn’t have any ball movement and no continuity at all. We had no chemistry and we cut plays short. We didn’t execute and our effort was horrendous and that is not the way we practice and the way we show up to play. That is not is how we are going to play anymore and that is bad.”

Lima Senior had not played a game since Dec. 20 and Simpson expected more energy from his team.

As the score indicates both squads had trouble recording points and after the first eight minutes, Lima Senior led 9-8 and by halftime the score was knotted at 15-15.

Not much changed in the second half as both teams continued to struggle shooting and it was the Titans opening up a 28-22 advantage going into the final stanza. The six-point lead was the largest advantage either team had throughout the first three quarters, 28-22.

Lima Senior cut the lead to one, 30-29 early in the fourth quarter but that is close as the Spartans would get as inconsistent shooting continued to plague the Spartans down the stretch and the Titans collected the win.

Spartan Brandon Moore had a double-double night as he scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Moore was the lone Lima Senior player to crack double digits in scoring.

For the Titans, CJ Hornbeak put in a game-high 15 points.

Simpson said this game might be a wake -up call for some of his players.

“It will be for some guys,” Simpson said. “We are coming off a break, and we should have a lot more intensity and a lot more energy to play in front of a crowd like this and we didn’t bring it tonight.”
