Roundup: Late bucket gives Perry boys hoops victory

PERRY TOWNSHIP — Ayden Simpson knocked down a shot to beat the final buzzer as Perry defeated Minster 41-39 in boys high school basketball Friday night.

Isaiah Sanders had 13 points and Simpson and Zamere Daniel each scored 10 for the Commodores. Cole Albers had 12 points and Kole Richard scored 10 for the Wildcats.

BLUFFTON — Tournament MVP Marek Donaldson had 18 points and Carson Soper (13) and Wade Ginther (12) also each scored in double digits as the Pirates secured the Lewis Family McDonald’s Holiday Tournament championship.

Soper and Ginther joined Donaldson on the all-tournament team.

BLUFFTON — All-tournament team selection Konner Knipp-Williams had 11 points for Continental the Lewis Family McDonald’s Holiday Tournament consolation game.

SWANTON — Kyrsten Martinez had 12 points and Whitney Langhals, who surpassed 1,000 career points earlier in the week, scored nine for the Vikings in the Bob Fisher Holiday Tournament championship game.

CONTINENTAL — Ava Ruck had 13 points and Chelsea Erford scored 11 for the Wildcats in the Putnam County League encounter. Bryn Tegenkamp had 10 points to lead Continental.

DEFIANCE — Allen East’s Eli Criblez won the 285-pound championship. Kade Wireman (150) and Trenton Gatchell (157) were each fourth in their respective divisions also for the Mustangs, who finished 11th in the team standings with 101 points.

AJ Schafer was fifth at 215 pounds and Kyle Lathrop was seventh at 175 pounds for Columbus Grove, which finished 22nd (70). Napoleon (193.5) won the team championship. Skyler Kirk was sixth at 126 pounds and Dejuan Jones was eighth at 215 pounds for Elida, which finished 34th with 42 points. Bluffton (tie for 48th, 21 points), Ottawa-Glandorf (53rd, seven points) and Lima Central Catholic (54th, five points) did not have any competitors among the top eight.

BLUFFTON — No. 25-ranked Ohio Northernwent on a 24-3 run during a 10-minute span in the third and fourth quarters and posted a victory against Bethany (W.Va.) on the final day of the Bluffton McDonald’s Holiday Tournament at the Sommer Center.

The Polar Bears extended their winning streak to seven games and improve to 10-1 overall, while the Bison fell to 2-10.

Sophomore Abi Akamineled five ONU players in double figures in scoring with a career-high 13 points.

Brooke Allen had 12 points, Layla Dials scored 11, Fort Jennings graduate Kristen Luersman had her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Brynn Serbin added 10 points.

Denison 54, Bluffton 43

BLUFFTON – Bluffton wrapped up the 2022 McDonald’s Holiday Classic with a loss to Denison. The Beavers fell to 7-4 on the season while Denison improved to 5-6.

Bluffton’s Lindsey Smith, a Kenton grad, had a career-high 12 points and nine rebounds in her first collegiate start. Kayla Prigge pitched in eight points and Pandora-Gilboa grad Lacie Fenstermaker and Katie Neuhart pulled down six boards apiece.

LIMA — Jada Haines (22), Alysia Lawson (14), Trinity Black Raines (12) and Ana Montero Sanz (10) each scored in double digits for the University of Northwestern Ohio (8-5).

LIMA — Hunter Bode (27), Lima Central Catholic grad Biggz Johnson (24), Trevon Wells (12) and Lima Senior grad Cam Miles (11) each scored in double digits for the host Racers (6-9). Wells also had 10 rebounds.

Suffolk 78, ONU 70

NAPLES, Fla. — Ohio Northern’s C.J. Napier scored a team-high 18 points to surpass 1,000 career points as the Polar Bears closed out their two-game set in the Naples Classic with aloss to Suffolk (Mass.) at the Community School of Naples.

The Polar Bears fell to 5-6 overall while the Rams improved to 5-5.

Napier added a game-high nine rebounds to his stat lineand is the 40th member of ONU’s 1,000-point club. He entered the game with 986 career points and now has 1,004.

Wapakoneta graduate Adam Scott tallied 16 points for ONU, while teammates Landen Long and Ethan Bell added 10 points each.
