Roundup: Bluffton advances to tourney title game

BLUFFTON — Marek Donaldson connected on eight 3-pointers as part of his 26-point effort in leading the host Pirates to a 70-54 Lewis Family McDonald’s Holiday Tournament boys high school basketball victory Thursday night against Cory-Rawson.

Wade Ginther and Kaden Lora had 16 and 11 points respectively also for Bluffton.

Arlington defeated Continental 67-31 in the other semifinal. Konner Knipp-Williams had eight points and Carson Etter scored seven for Continental, which will play C-R in the consolation game at 5:30 p.m. today followed by the championship game at approximately 7 p.m.

Upper Scioto Valley 51 (OT)

WAYNESFIELD — The Mustangs advanced to the championship game of the Border Battle. Carson Clum had 15 points and Keaton Miller scored 11 for Allen East. Alex Sanders (13), Maddox Underwood (12), Drew Stephens (10) and Blaine Castle (10) each scored in double digits for Ada.

Ada 51, Waynesfield-Goshen 50

WAYNESFIELD — The Bulldogs outscored in the Border Battle tournament host 19-10 in the fourth quarter to secure a spot in the championship game against Allen East. Levi Glick had 17 points and and Jayden Elliot scored 12 for W-G, which will play USV in the consolation game following Friday’s noon girls consolation game between USV and Ada. The boys championship game between Ada and Allen East will follow Friday’s 6 p.m. Allen East-Waynesfield-Goshen girls championship game.

Fremont Ross 62, Bath 51

SANDUSKY — Cole Craddock (18), Drake Craddock (13) and Jaxon Foster (10) each scored in double digits in the Jingle Bell Jam at Cedar Point.

Van Wert 64, Lincolnview 38

MIDDLE POINT — Aidan Pratt had 19 points and Carson Smith scored 10 for Van Wert. Cal Evans and Austin Bockrath had 15 and 11 points respectively for Lincolnview.

Parks moves up list

ST. MARYS — St. Marys’ Austin Parks is now fourth on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,030 points as he pursues No. 3 Damon Goodwin, who finished his Roughrider career with 1,190.

ELIDA — Addison Freeman had 23 points and Payton Kuhn scored 14 for the host Bulldogs in the championship game of the Vicki Mauk Holiday Tournament.

NEW BREMEN — Chloe Homan had 17 points and Marina Nelson scored six for the tournament host in the consolation game. Reese Rable had 11 points and Cora Rable scored nine for St. Marys.

PERRY TOWNSHIP — Olivia Stolly had 16 points and Kiegh Macklin scored 12 for Lima Central Catholic. Khaliah Luster led Perry with 13 points.

WAPAKONETA — Elisabeth Good had 12 points and Reagan Courter scored eight for Wapak.

Marion Harding Classic

MARION — St. Marys (146 points) finished fourth behind champion St. Edward (252.5) in the 32 team event. Shawnee (51) and Lima Senior (42) were 22nd and 23rd respectively.

St. Marys’ Tate Hisey won the 120-pound championship. Teammate Bo Hertenstein was second at 144 pounds. St. Marys’ Cole Donovan (190) and Kayden Sharpe (157) were fourth and sixth in their respective classes and teammate Michael Crites was seventh at 126 pounds.

Lima Senior’s Davion Browning was fourth at 165 pounds and teammate Sir Horrison was sixth at 144 pounds. Shawnee’s Ben Bullock (157) and Ethan Morgan (138) were seventh and eighth respectively their divisions.

Bluffton 67, Bethany 57

BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Bluffton University men’s basketball team secured a victory over the Bethany College Bison in the consolation game of the McDonald’s Holiday Tournament. The Beavers improved to 3-7 overall while the Bison fell to 0-12.

Kegan Owen led the Bluffton offense with 15 points on the board. Connor Martin and Nevin Robson (Hardin Northern) were just two off his pace with 13 apiece.

Ohio Northern 70, Clarkson 65

NAPLES, Fla. — The Ohio Northern men’s basketball team opened its two-game slate in the Naples (Fla.) Classic with a win against Clarkson (N.Y.) at the Community School of Naples.

The Polar Bears improve to 5-5 overall while dropping the Golden Knights to 5-4.

Landen Long tied a career-high with six made 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 25 points for ONU.

C.J. Napier added a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds and is now 14 points shy of becoming the 40th member of ONU’s 1,000-point club.

The Polar Bears return to action at 5 p.m. Friday to face Suffolk (Mass.) in their final game in the Naples Classic.

Women’s basketball

Bluffton 68, Bethany 48

BLUFFTON – The Bluffton University women’s basketball team opened the 2022 McDonald’s Holiday Classic with a 68-48 victory against the Bethany College Bison on Thursday, Dec. 29. The Beavers improved to 7-3 on the season while Bethany fell to 2-9.

Powering the Beavers was Morgan Smith with 14 points and 10 rebounds for another double-double before she lost her tooth. Kayla Prigge and Lindsey Smith (Kenton) tallied nine points apiece. Lacie Fenstermaker (Pandora-Gilboa), Olivia Zender and Smith all ripped down seven boards.

Bluffon will be back in action Friday for day two of the McDonald’s Classic with a matchup against Denison University. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. following the Ohio Northern-Bethany clash at noon,

Ohio Northern 60, Denison 50

BLUFFTON — The No. 25-ranked Ohio Northern women’s basketball team opened play at the Bluffton McDonald’s Holiday Tournament with a ictory over Denison on Thursday afternoon at the Sommer Center.

The Polar Bears extend their winning streak to six games and improve to 9-1 overall, while the Big Red fall to 4-6.

Brooke Allen scored 17 points, Brynn Serbin had her second career double-double with 13 points and a career record-tying 10 rebounds and Kristen Luersman (Fort Jennings) scored 11 points for ONU.
