Roundup: Lima Senior event to feature winter teams

LIMA — The Spartan Madness Winter Sports Costume Party will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Lima Senior High School.

Men’s soccer

Ohio Northern

ranked No. 11

ADA — The Ohio Northern men’s soccer team is ranked No. 11 in the eighth United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Top 25 Poll of the 2022 season, which was released on Tuesday.

The Polar Bears improved two spots from the previous week when they were ranked No. 13 and clinched the Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season championship.

Messiah (Pa.) is the top-ranked team in this week’s poll, taking over for previous No. 1 Chicago (Ill.), which fell to No. 2.

Kenyon, Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) and Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) round out the top five.

Additionally, ONU is ranked No. 2 in the eighth United Soccer Coaches Region VII poll of the season, trailing only Kenyon.

In the Week 9 D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, which was also released on Tuesday, Northern is ranked No. 19.

Ellis receives

OAC accolade

ADA — Ohio Northern goalkeeper Josh Ellis was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 24-30.

This marks the second career OAC Player of the Week accolade for Ellis, who also earned the honor Sept. 19.

Spotlight falls

on UNOH’s Rosa

The University of Northwestern Ohio’s Avelino Rosa has been named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Rosa scored his first and second career goals in a 7-0 win at Concordia on Oct. 26 while assisting twice in the same match. He followed up with another goal and an assist in the Racers’ 7-3 win at Rochester on Oct. 29. Rosa put five of his seven shots on goal during the week for a shots on goal percentage of .714.

ADA — The Ohio Northern women’s soccer team sits just outside the top 25 rankings in the eighth United Soccer Coaches poll of 2022 and the Week 9 D3soccer.com poll, both of which were released on Tuesday.

Northern is the first team listed in the “Also receiving votes” category in both polls, putting the Polar Bears at No. 26 in each one.

ONU received 67 points in the D3soccer.com poll, trailing the 87 points of No. 25 Williams (Mass.).

Misericordia (Pa.) is the top-ranked team in both polls.

Conference honors

ONU’s Straus

ADA — Ohio Northern junior Bri Straus was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 24-30.

Straus earned her first career OAC Player of the Week selection on the heels of the Polar Bears’ wins against Baldwin Wallace and Marietta last week en route to clinching a share of the OAC regular season championship with Capital.

Bluffton’s Masters

receives honor

BLUFFTON, — Bluffton’s Evie Masters has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after helping lead Bluffton to a 4-0 shutout at Manchester in the 2022 regular-season finale.

Ohio Northern 1

ADA — Ohio Northern bowed out of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament with a 25-18, 29-31, 25-23, 26-24 loss to Muskingum at the ONU Sports Center.

The third-seeded Polar Bears end their season with a 16-10 record, while the sixth-seeded Muskies improve to 18-10 and advance to the semifinals to play at top-seeded Otterbein on Thursday.

Erin Wagner had 20 kills and Ava Ehlinger had 15 kills to lead ONU.

Duo named

all-conference

ADA — Ohio Northern’s Erin Wagner and Rachel Jennings were named All-Ohio Athletic Conference for the 2022 season in voting conducted by the league’s 10 head coaches.

Wagner was a first team All-OAC selection and Jennings was a second team All-Conference pick.

HCAC recognizes

Bluffton twosome

BLUFFTON — Bluffton’s Maddie White and Jenna Woods have been selected second team All-HCAC.

Women’s golf

Findlay third

at invitational

BRADENTON, Fla. — The University of Findlay finished the fall schedule with a third place at the Rollins Legends Invitational at Bradenton Country Club.

The Oilers, currently ranked sixth in the nation, finished with a 54-hole total of 890 (+38) with rounds of 295 (+11 ), 301 (+17), and 294 (+10) to put them 22 shots behind tournament champion Lynn.

Lima Central Catholic graduate Mary Kelly Mulcahy tied for 11th (72-76-72 — 220), St. Marys grad Jill Schmitmeyer tied for 27th (74-77-75 — 226) and LCC grad Erin Mulcahy tied for 49th (78-78-76 — 232).
