Roundup: 2 former area coaches make Hall of Fame

Former Lima area coaches Doug Frye (St. Marys) and Ken Meyer (Marion Local) are among those selected as the latest Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductees.

Frye, during his second go-around as the Roughrider head coach, went 58-20 in the last seven seasons and either won or shared three straight Western Buckeye League titles from 2016-18. He took St. Marys to the playoffs in each of his last five seasons. In his first stint with St. Marys that went from 1998 to 2008, he went 89-35, collected three WBL titles and in 2004 took the team to the state championship game. Frey coached Wapakoneta from 2010-13 where he went 33-10 and led the Redskins to two playoff appearances.

Meyer was Marion Local’s head football coach for 19 years with a 70 percent career winning percentage. In 1981, Meyer’s Flyers became the first team in Mercer County history to quality for the Ohio High School Athletic Association football playoffs, finishing as a state semifinalist.
