PORT CLINTON — Shawnee singles player Gabe Burke and the Ottawa-Glandorf duo of Eli Schmenk and Joshua Walls qualified for state in boys tennis Thursday by reaching the Division II district semifinals.
Area players reaching the quarterfinals before being eliminated were St. Marys’ Joey Vanderhorst in singles and Bath’s Daniel Bolon and Ezra Bolon and Shawnee’s Mason Stahl and Mac Davis in doubles.
Those falling in the opening round included Van Wert’s Jace Fast and Lima Central Catholic’s Max Gaumier in singles and Elida’s Jaden Neuman and Ben Osmon in doubles.
Play will resume at 10 a.m. Saturday at the VonThron-Hablitzel Tennis Center.

PERRY TOWNSHIP — The Commodores scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Winning pitcher Joey Hoersten did not permit a earned run or walk and allowed eight hits while striking out nine in seven innings. Brady Shively had a double and an RBI also for Perry, which will play Lincolnview in the district semifinals at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Coldwater. Brock Dues had two hits, including a double, and an RBI for Fort Recovery.

receive recognition
The University of Findlay’s Dominic Guarnieri has been tabbed as the NCAA Division II Jackie Steinmann Women’s Golf Coaches Association National Coach of the Year Presented by Golf Pride.
The St. Marys graduate led the Oilers to the 2022 NCAA Division II National Championship last week at the Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Ga.
In addition, senior and St. Marys graduate Jill Schmitmeyer was voted second team all-American and all-region, and freshman and Lima Central Catholic grad Mary Kelly Mulcahy was tabbed honorable mention all-American and all-East Region.

MOBILE, AL – The University of Northwestern Ohio fell to the nation’s top team and defending national champion ub the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Championship
The Racers finish the season at 27-4 (.870), garnering most wins in program history, topping the previous record of 22. Their .870 winning percentage is the second highest in program history and the best since 2016-17 when UNOH went 22-2.

ADA — Jon Tropf has been named an assistant coach at Ohio Northern.
Jon comes to Ohio Northern after spending the past eight seasons at Goshen (Ind.), including the previous five (2018-22) as head coach.
He was an assistant coach at Goshen under current ONU head coach Neal Young from 2015-17.
