Roundup: Shawnee claims boys tennis invitational crown

ELIDA — Shawnee swept the doubles division as part of its first-place finish at Saturday’s Elida Invitational.

The Indians finished with 16 points followed by Elida (10), Gahanna (10) and Wapakoneta (0).

Claiming doubles titles were Mac Davis and Mason Stahl (A division), Salah Muhammad and Gabe Rutter (B division) and Seth Greishop and Shashank Chanomolu (C division). Gahanna’s Brandon Carpico won the singles division.

PERRY TOWNSHIP — Winning pitcher Joey Hoersten allowed two hits and a walk while striking out 13 in five innings. He also had three hits, including a double and a home run, and three RBI. Ryan Yingst had three hits, including a double and a triple, and four RBI. Mason Stuck had Ridgemont’s hits, including a double.

OTTAWA — The Titans scored six times in the bottom of the sixth and then held the Flyers to one run in the top of the seventh. Brad Maag had two hits and two RBI and Carter Schimmoeller had a hit and two RBI for O-G. Colton Pohlman had a double and two RBI and Hayden Poeppelman had a double and an RBI for Marion Local.

KENTON — Luke Leffler had two hits and an RBI and Brent Rader had a double and an RBI for the host Wildcats. Zach Neiswander and Levi Green each had two hits for the Bulldogs.

ANTWERP — Gabe Roof had two hits, including a double, and an RBI for Kalida in a game shortened to five innings due to inclement weather.

ONU clinches OAC

regular season title

ADA — Ohio Northern won the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season championship, sweeping a doubleheader with Heidelberg by scores of 6-3 and 2-1 on Senior Day at the ONU Softball Field.

The Polar Bears improve to 21-9 overall and finished with a 16-2 record in the OAC.

Northern entered Saturday with a one-game lead over Muskingum in the standings and secured the conference title with its Game 1 win over Heidelberg (20-16 overall, 9-9 OAC) after the Muskies split their doubleheader with Wilmington.

This marks the Polar Bears’ 11th regular-season conference title in program history. It is their first regular-season conference championship since they were co-champs in 2014 and first outright title since 2012.

Indiana Tech 2

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The championship match of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament came down to the final two singles matches as top-seeded UNOH won the tournament title against second-seeded Indiana Tech.

UNOH got wins from Sergio Conde at No. 1 singles, David Ayguavives at No. 5sSingles, and Nils Messin at No. 6 singles. With UNOH up 3-2, the remaining two singles competitions tightened up. Anastasis Lavdas was one game up on David Ayguavives of UNOH at the No. 5 slot when Marcos Salazar gave the Racers the win with a 7-2 tiebreaker against Juan Avellaneda.

It’s the seventh tournament title for UNOH in the last eight years with the 2020 tournament being canceled due to COVID-19. With the win, UNOH receives the WHAC’s automatic berth to the May 17-21 NAIA National Championship in Mobile, Ala.

ONU 5, John Carroll 4

ADA — Ohio Northern captured the OAC regular season title with a the victory Friday.

The Polar Bears improve to 20-4 overall and won the OAC title with a 6-0 record, while the Blue Streaks fall to 8-8 (5-1 OAC).

With the win, ONU also ran its winning streak to a seven matches. Ada graduate Zach Beaschler collected singles and doubles victories for the hosts.

Women’s tennis

Indiana Tech 4,

UNOH 0

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Top-seeded Indiana Tech repeated as the WHAC champions by defeating No. 2 UNOH 4-0.

Indiana Tech won the doubles point and finished three singles competitions.

The Warriors now receive the league’s automatic berth to the NAIA Women’s National Championship in Mobile, Ala.
