Roundup: Bath defeats Paulding in tourney opener

MILLER CITY — Bath defeated Paulding 42-32 in a Division III boys basketball sectional semifinal Tuesday.

The Wildcats outscored the Panthers 18-5 in the fourth quarter. Britton Hall had 15 points and Jonah Wauben scored 10 for Bath. Peyton Adams had 12 points and Nick Manz scored nine for Paulding (8-15). Bath (8-15) will play Bluffton at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Miller City.

PAULDING — Austin Miller (23), Brady Wheeler (17) and Will McBride (10) scored in double digits for Shawnee (15-7).

Napoleon 58, Elida 42

PAULDING — David Etzkorn had 18 points and X’zorion Island scored nine for Elida (3-20).

VAN WERT — Jarron Swick had 20 points and Jon Grote scored 11 for Fort Jennings (6-17).

COLDWATER — Sam Koesters (19), Luke Beyke (19), Jaden Lange (15) and Seth Heitkamp (13) scored in double digits for St. Henry (13-10). Cayden Murphy had 21 points and Ethan Murphy and Carter Conley had 11 and 10 points respectively for Ada (4-19).

New Bremen’s Nick Alig received player of the year honors and Coldwater’s Rick Harting and Versailles’ Tyler Philpot shared coach of the year recognition in the Midwest Athletic Conference.

WESTERVILLE — Ohio Northern got off to a quick start and pulled away late to win in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament at Otterbein’s Rike Center.

The fifth-seeded Polar Bears (17-7) advance to the semifinals Thursday at top-seeded and No. 12-ranked John Carroll.

The fourth-seeded Cardinals end their season at 18-7.

Wapakoneta’s graduate Lexi Jacobs had 15 points, Bath grad Jaidyn Hale scored 14 and Brynn Serbin finished with 10 points for ONU.

Bluffton’s Smith

BLUFFTON — Bluffton University’s Morgan Smith has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week after averaging a double-double in a pair of victories last week. It marks the second time this season that Smith has been accorded that honor.

Smith powered the Beavers to the No. 2 seed in the HCAC tournament, averaging 19 points and 11.5 rebounds while shooting 16-of-23 (69.6 percent) from the field. She hit 6-of-8 at the line and blocked four shots as Bluffton defeated Manchester and Defiance.

ADA — Mike Bonnell has been named interim head women’s tennis coach at Ohio Northern.

Bonnell has been the head men’s tennis coach at ONU since the 2016-17 season, compiling a 56-38 record for the Polar Bears, a winning percentage of .596.

He is an Ohio Northern alumnus who played tennis for the Polar Bears from 1990-1992.

He served as the dual men’s and women’s head coach at Ohio Dominican for five seasons. He replaces head coach Scott Wills, who served as the women’s tennis coach at Ohio Northern for 21 seasons before leaving for Alma (Mich.) to be the vice president for advancement.
