Lima Senior, area NWCC girls basketball previews

Lima Senior

Division: I

Coach: LaKeisha Sigman (first season)

2020-21 overall record: 4-16

2020-21 league record: 3-4 (tied for fifth)

2021 postseason finish: Lost 55-40 to Sylvania Northview in sectional finals.

Returning 2020-21 varsity letter winners: Kaytlynne Hile (Sr.), Tillie Nelson (Jr.), Tiana Spivey (Jr.), Ayrianna Enberg (Jr.)

Others on varsity roster: Asianna Rose (Sr.), Destiny Harris (Jr.), Maisie Stawsher (Soph.), Amiyah Coleman (Fr.), Anya James (Fr.), Ke’Asia Jones (Fr.), Qua’Jane Tobias (Fr.), Dakota Lewis (Jr.), Jasmine Walker (Fr.), Ava Sheeter (Fr.), Malaisa Harper (Soph.)

Coach’s analysis: We will start the season with a small core of returning juniors and seniors. We hope to develop our young players that have very little experience at the varsity level. We have a lot of teaching to do. We want the ladies to continue to come out and get better and compete each day.

NWCC

Hardin Northern

Division: IV

Coach: Brady Mast (10th season; also head coach 2000-04)

2020-21 overall record: 7-15

2020-21 league record: 2-5 (sixth)

2021 postseason finish: Lost 63-26 to Fort Recovery in sectional semifinals.

Returning 2020-21 varsity letter winners: Layla Perkins (Sr.), Bella Wilson (Jr.), Katie Good (Jr.), Emma Martin (Jr.)

Others on varsity roster: Lola Duncan (Jr.), Kylee Clem (Soph.) , Kylee Legge (Jr.), Tosha Shepherd (Sr.), Makenna Eibling (Soph.) , Skylar Gaunt (Sr.)

Coach’s analysis: We have a talented group of juniors in Katie, Bella and Emma who have gained a lot of varsity experience the last two years. They will be expected to take a leadership role this year and I believe they will be very good in this role. Layla will complement this group well, and I think that we should see more offensive output as a group than we have in the last few years. We should be much more balanced with contributions coming from all four of the returning letter winners. Kylee Clem, Makenna Eibling, Kylee Legge and Lola Duncan will give us some depth that we haven’t had as well. Skylar Gaunt in her second year back after a few years not playing will round out a varsity group who I believe will be able to compete on a nightly basis. I think our biggest concern now is on the defensive end. We have to find a way to stop people and put some pressure on our opponents. We have the potential to be an improved defensive team but are still learning how to play as a group. I think once we find our comfort zone we will be an improved defensive team but that is going to take a group effort from all players. We will work hard and I see us improving as the season progresses. We expect to be competitive but will need several players to step up and lead the way. I believe we have a strong pair of seniors who will drive the outcome of this season. We should be more balanced offensively and if we work hard on the defensive end, we will compete each night.

Perry

Division: III

Coach: John Berens (fourth season)

2020-21 overall record: 8-14

2020-21 league record: 4-3 (tied for fourth)

2021 postseason finish: Lost 65-36 to Spencerville in sectional semifinals.

Returning 2020-21 varsity letter winners: Bryce James (Jr.), Danaisha Patton (Jr.), Mary Hoersten (Soph.) , Lexenna Lee (Soph.) , Alexa Burgess (Soph.) , Mi’auni Hall (Soph.)

Others that may start season on varsity roster: Rhema Pernell (Jr.), Alana Pernell (Soph.) , Carlee Dalton (Soph.) , Tyanah Gordon (Soph.)

Coach’s analysis: Youth again will be a factor for the Lady Commodores. How quickly the team learns how to play with each other will determine our success. Led by junior Bryce James, this edition of Perry girls basketball team will hopefully be exciting to watch and grow throughout the season.

Ridgemont

Others likely to make varsity roster: Taryn Fraley (Sr.), Zoe Schlegel (Sr.), Hannah Schulze (Sr.), Kennedy Bigelow (Jr.), Kyra Sutherland (Jr.), Peyton Webb (Jr.)

Coach’s analysis: We have a very hardworking and enthusiastic group of young ladies this year. We are returning eight varsity letter winners, and one of those is a returning varsity starter. We have been blessed with 23 ladies in our program this year, and several of them are returning from last year. Our team goals this season are to finish at the top of the NWCC, play selfless team basketball, always give full effort, and challenge each other every day. It is a joy watching these ladies grow, develop, and make each other better. We are excited to see them work toward their goals, encourage their teammates, and improve as a team this season.

Note: Temple Christian does not have a varsity or JV girls basketball this season.
