Lima area Western Buckeye League girls basketball previews

WBL

Bath

Division: II

Coach: Greg Mauk (23rd season)

2020-21 overall record: 22-3

2020-21 league record: 9-0 (first)

2021 postseason finish: Lost 49-37 to Bryan in district semifinals.

Returning 2020-21 varsity letter winners: Lexi Renner (Jr.), Elena Oliver (Jr.), Rachel Clark (Jr.), Anne Oliver (Soph.), Claire Foust (Soph.)

Also on varsity roster: Ava Craddock (Sr.)

Coach’s analysis: We lost six letter winners to graduation which was over 90% of our scoring. Ava Craddock has returned from Tennessee where she played her sophomore and junior years and scored a total of nearly 800 points those two years. We have a lot of kids coming together for the first time. We are trying to find out who our leaders are and what style of play is going to best fit our personnel. All three returning juniors have played significant minutes since their freshman seasons.

Celina

Division: II

Coach: Branden Rushton (second season)

2020-21 overall record: 2-19

2020-21 league record: 1-8 (10h)

2021 postseason finish: Lost 56-33 to St. Marys in sectional semifinals.

Returning 2020-21 varsity letter winners: Kyilla Billingsley (Jr.), Taylor Klingshirn (Jr.), Kira Dirksen (Jr.), Payton Bertke (Jr.), Amelia Lutz (Jr.)

Others on varsity roster: Zoey Burns (Sr.), Ava Knapke (Soph.), Julia Vehorn (Soph.), Kate Braun (Fr.), Jacci Felver, Maddie Fleck, Kenlee Holstad

Coach’s analysis: This year we are bringing back a varsity core made up of three returning starters and three others with significant varsity playing time. We are excited to take the next step in our program.

Elida

Division: II

Coach: Elise Jenkins (third season)

2020-21 overall record: 8-11

2020-21 league record: 2-5 (eighth)

2021 postseason finish: Lost 49-31 to Napoleon in sectional finals.

Returning 2020-21 varsity letter winners: Addisyn Freeman (Jr.), Elli Mitchell (Sr.), Payton Kuhn (Jr.), Bella Lopez (Jr.), Hadassah Johnson (Jr.)

May start season on varsity roster: Jojo Knight (Soph.)

Coach’s analysis: After experiencing last year and all of its difficulties (short five regular season games due to COVID-10), our team has developed a great energy, appreciation and excitement coming into the 2021 season. I’ve been very pleased with our girls and their work ethic. Upperclassmen are being great leaders and the younger players are displaying a great eagerness to learn. With a guard-heavy roster, our goal is to create our offense through defense. Look for Elida to put high pressure on the ball full court to create easy baskets through the fast break.

Kenton

Division: II

Coach: Jay Bostelman (fourth season)

2020-21 overall record: 8-12

2020-21 league record: 3-6 (tied for sixth)

Coach’s analysis: After graduating eight seniors from the 2020-21 season, we will have all new faces in our lineup. Our girls are looking forward to competing in the WBL and are working hard at becoming a team. We are looking to play fast, push the tempo and play hard pressure defense.

Ottawa-Glandorf

Division: III

Coach: Troy Yant (10th season)

2020-21 overall record: 26-3

Returning 2020-21 varsity letter winners: Kaydree Frey (Sr.), Chloee Schroeder (Sr.), Emma Brinkman (Jr.), Erin Kaufman (Sr.), Chloee Glenn (Jr.), Lily Haselman (Jr.), Myka Aldrich (Soph.), Maggie Verhoff (Soph.), Katie Kaufman (Soph.) .

Others on varsity roster: Kaelyn Grothouse (Fr.), Carlie Brinkman (Fr.), Makenna Siefker (Fr.).

It will take a while to get everyone on the same page, having had a condensed summer schedule and a long successful soccer season, but we look forward to competing as our team comes together.
