Roundup: NWC, MAC hand out football honors

Columbus Grove running back Colin Metzger (co-offensive player of the year), linebacker AJ Schafer (defensive player of the year) and Andy Schafer (coach of the year) and Delphos Jefferson quarterback Colin Bailey (co-offensive player of the year) received top football honors in the Northwest Conference.

Joining Bailey and Metzger on the first team offense were running backs Gunner Grigsby (Spencerville), Fabian Pena (Leipsic) and Dale Smith (Spencerville), linemen Mitch Douglas (Columbus Grove), Adrian Carrillo (Leipsic), Aaron Tabler (Bluffton), Gunner Rister (Allen East) and Mason Penix (Crestview) and receivers Jacksen Schroeder (Columbus Grove), Trent Siefker (Leipsic) and Carter Young (Allen East).

Joining Schafer on the first team defense were linemen Mitch Douglas (Columbus Grove), Ethan Lammers (Leipsic), Sy Morris (Spencerville) and Evan Shafer (Allen East), linebackers Tadd Koch (Columbus Grove), Chase Miller (Allen East) and Brayden Casteel (Leipsic), defensive Backs Quin Schroeder (Leipsic), Jacksen Schroeder (Columbus Grove), Jacob Hershberger (Allen East) and Luke Kaufman (Columbus Grove) and specialist Rece Verhoff (Columbus Grove).

New Bremen quarterback David Homan (offensive player of the year), Marion Local inside linebacker Darren Meier (defensive player of the year) and Marion Local’s Tim Goodwin (coach of the year) have earned top football honors in the Midwest Athletic Converence.

Lima Central Catholic’s Bridget Mulcahy has been named the Division II girls district player of the year by the Northwest District Golf Coaches Association.

Teammate Emma Mayers joined her on the all-district first team. LCC’s Carlie VanMeter received second team recognition and the Thunderbirds’ Leiahnni Smith and Olivia Garver made honorable mention. LCC’s Dan Reinicke was named the coach of the year.

Bath’s Britton Hall was named the D-II boys player of the year.

Bluffton makes

HCAC tourney

BLUFFTON — When Bluffton University took down Manchester University 1-0 on Wednesday, the Beavers netted their first-ever Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament berth. Bluffton wrapped up its regular season with an 8-7 mark which is the most wins in a season since 2008. The four wins (4-5) in conference play also equaled the 2008 squad for the most-ever wins in the HCAC.

As the number 6 seed, Bluffton will travel to number three 3 seed Anderson University on Saturday, Oct. 30, for a 2 p.m. start. The Bluffton-Anderson winner earns a ticket to number 2 seed Hanover College on Wednesday.
