Ohio roundup: Fort Loramie girls win D-IV basketball crown

DAYTON — Fort Loramie limited McDonald to two points in the first quarter on its way to a 60-26 Division IV girls high school basketball championship Saturday at the University of Dayton Arena.

Fort Loramie (29-1) went from a 17-2 first-quarter advantage to a 30-12 halftime lead. The Redskins the held the scoring edge 19-9 in the third quarter and 11-5 in the final frame.

Dana Rose had 13 points and Kenzie Hoelscher scored 12 for Fort Loramie, which won the rebound battle 28-20 and committed 16 turnovers compared to McDonald’s 25. Fort Loramie made 22 of 39 field goal attempts for 56.4% and 12 of 18 free throw attempts for 66.7%. McDonald (24-3) was 11-36 from the field for 30.6% and 4 of 6 from the free throw line for 66.7%.

Napoleon 76, Vinton County 44

DAYTON — Napoleon triumphed in the Division II girls high school basketball state championship game at the University of Dayton Arena.

Taylor Strock (23), Caely Ressler (18) and Kalli Helberg (16) each scored in double digits for Napoleon.

Bassett helps

Ashland win title

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Bluffton graduate Trevor Bassitt helped Ashland University win the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships.

Bassitt won the 60 hurdles in 7.83 seconds and the 200 dash in a meet-record 20.48 seconds. He also was third (6.76 seconds) in the 60 dash and was a member of the winning 4×4 relay team (3:10.15), giving Bassitt five career national titles and 11 All-American citations.

3rd at nationals

ST. LOUIS — Ashland’s Daniel Beemer defeated McKendree’s Josh Jones 3-1 to finish third in the 174-pound weight class at the Division II Championships at America’s Convention Center Complex.

Earlier in the day, Beemer, an Ottawa-Glandorf graduate, dropped a 7-0 semifinal decision to Lindenwood’s Abner Romero. Beemer then defeated Pitt-Johnstown’s Brock Biddle 11-4 in the consolation semifinals.

On Friday, Beemer earned a sudden-victory 3-1 quarterfinal win against Jones to earn his first All-American citation.
