The University of Northwestern Ohio women’s basketball team had little trouble scoring against Concordia but unfortunately for the Racers, they could not stop the Cardinals on the defensive end and fell 89-73 in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference clash Wednesday night
It was a fast paced and back and forth game as the two teams put up big numbers but Concordia eventually pulled away in the fourth quarter.
UNOH falls to 4-3 on the season and 1-3 in the WHAC. Concordia improved to 7-3 and 1-0 in conference play.
Racer sophomore Jada Haines led the Racers in scoring with 29 points and made a number of big buckets to keep the Racers in the game.
UNOH head coach Jillian Segura said “Haines has been amazing. She put in so much work over the summer despite it being a COVID summer and a lack of gym space. We heard from her hometown that she was always putting in work and that paid off and it shows.”
One of the keys to the game was 3-pt shooting, where, despite attempting nine more 3-pointers, UNOH scored one more than their Michigan-based opponents. The Racers finished 13-34 (38.2%) from the 3-pt range and 27-61 (44.3%) from the field as a whole.
Concordia led by a myriad of big contributions and saw four Cadinals score in double digits. Freshman Taylor Leatherman and senior J’may Simmons each had 15 points and senior Allyson Hunt added 12 points. Senior Tris’styn Williams chipped in 10 points. Cocordia shot 35-66 (53%) from the field and 12-25 (48%) from downtown.
UNOH started on the front foot, as Haines opened the scoring with a layup and drew a foul seconds later. However, this would be the last time the Racers led, as Concordia responded with a 12-2 run and put them in the driver’s seat for most of the game. The home team tried multiple times to make a comeback, cutting the deficit to as little as three, but were never able to truly take control of the game.
Speaking to the Racers competitive nature, which never saw them down and out until the final minutes, Segura said “I think we started a little slow in the first quarter, but eventually it kinda turned around and we were able to play more our tempo and style.”
After opening the season 4-1, the Racers have dropped two straight and Segura added that she wants to focus on improving each game.
“At a certain point, you want to be playing to your potential and I don’t know, with the amount of games we have left, if we’ll be there by the end of the season but that’s the goal, to work hard every single day and every opportunity that we have.
The Lady Racers continue their season with two straight WHAC matchups at Madonna University on Jan. 29 and 31.
Boys basketball
Leipsic 59, Cory-Rawson 55
MT. CORY — Leipsic’s Jaden Siefker scored 24 points and Mason Brandt added 17 points. For Cory-Rawson, Grant Bacon notched 19 points and and Matt White added 12 points.
Leipsic improves to 12-2 for the year and 6-1 in the Blanchard Valley Conference. Cory-Rawson drops to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference play.
USV changes
USV to play varsity gamesboys basketball games this weekend will be varsity-only and both games will begin at 6 p.m. On Friday, Upper Scioto Valley is at Elgin,and on Saturday Coldwater visits Upper Scioto Valley.

PERRY TOWNSHIP — Bath outscored Perry 29-23 in the second half. for a 54-48 boys high school basketball victory Tuesday night. Carter Parlapiano had 20 points and Jonah Wauben scored nine for the Wildcats (7-8). Will Knight had 15 points and Bubby Knight scored 10 for the host Commodores (12-3).
