Bowling: Wapakoneta boys, girls collect sectional titles

The Division I high school bowling district Saturday at Astro Lanes in Wapakoneta promises to be a major shootout . Someplace Wapak kicked out a split Saturday that made the difference as it topped 2019 D-II state champion St Marys 3,860-3,859 to claim the Rossford D-I sectional. Perrysburg and Ashland added to the drama with scores of 3,822 and 3,806.

Strangely enough only one of these teams or perhaps Lexington or Celina will advance to state play following the upcoming district action..

Derek Fisher (622 series) and Cameron Now did everything that they could to keep St Marys in the battle but in the end it was the team balance of Wapak that brought home the gold.

Joining the six teams mentioned at Wapak will be the best six bowlers who were not on an advancing team. Lima Senior’s Isaac Hicks and Elida’s Matt Adcock were in that category.

While the Wapak boys squeezed out the a victory, the Wapak girls paced by the first career 700 for Madison Doseck (707) outdistanced runner-up Celina 3,725-3,310.

Ashland, Shawnee, Bowling Green and Sandusky also advanced.

Abbey Ambroza paced Shawnee with a 612 to finish second overall. Emma Holden rolled her first 200 game to support the Shawnee effort.

Lima Senior’s Tatum Twining also advanced individually.

At the D-II competition in Dayton, Fort Loramie’s Elena Bulcher rolled a 300 and 718 series to qualify for state play next week in Columbus.

The local D-II district was held at Westgate Lanes in Lima.

The biggest feature of this district was on the girls’ side of the ledger where yet another battle occurred between St Marys and Coldwater and the results were the same as the sectional action. Coldwater took the title and will travel with St Marys and Bryan to OHSAA action next weekend for state competition at Wayne Webb Bowl.

Rachel Miller and Alison Fox with scores of 639 and 603 paced Coldwater. Tricia Yahl rolled a 629 for the Roughriders.

The scoring seemed a little higher than the week before over the same conditions at Minster. It was reflected in the scoring as Coldwater shot a 3,834 that would have place third in the D-I district with some of the best teams in the state of Ohio. St. Marys’ 3,762 of St Marys and Bryan’s 3729 were also very strong for the conditions.

Taylor Kaufman (668) of Perkins as well as Lorrie Decker (598) of Van Wert and Spencer Schwaiger (588) of Napoleon will also make the trip.

On the side of things for the Coldwater boys really had to qualify for the trip to Columbus.

Perkins (4,180) and Galion (4,146) were first and second respectively at Westgate. Coldwater survived with a baker set of 1,160 to get past Fort Recovery for the final berth by 36 pins. The final baker game for each was 194-141.

“It was a battle,” Coldwater coach Rick Hartings said. “I am just happy that we were able to roll the final baker and pull it out.”

There was one very unique occurrence as the top three bowlers were not on an advancing team. Tod Spurlock of Bucyrus (675), Spencer Alig of New Bremen (664) and Nicholas Beekman of Galion (661) will also make the Columbus trip.

The next three spots in the standings were also individuals on teams that did not advance, including Jared Timmerman of Fort Recovery with a 653.

Brayden Dalton of Perry made the top 10 with a 610 and Ethan Schroeder of Ottawa-Glandorf was not far behind with a 597.
