CANTON — Celina’s Holden Cubberley finished third overall in Division II at the 2020 Ohio High School Athletic Association championships Wednesday.
Cubberley finished with a score of 416.95. Columbus Wellington’s George Callanan was first with a score of 469.50 and Hawken’s Angus Williams was second with a score of 425.15. Shawnee’s Charlie Spyker placed 12th and St. Marys’ Kameron MacLean was 14th. St. Marys’ Zander Sppes was 22nd.
In Division II girls, Defiance’s Addison Fleishman was seventh and New Bremen’s Vivian Niekamp placed 10th.

Paulding’s Giesige named top NWC player
Paulding senior Chelsi Giesige was selected as the 2019-20 NWC Player of the Year in voting by Northwest Conference girls’ basketball coaches. Giesige averaged 16.8 points, 3 steals and 3 assists per game in leading the Panthers to an 18-4 regular season record.
Joining Giesige on the NWC first teamwere Emma Leis (Spencerville), Alexis Gregory (Crestview), Kenzie King (Columbus Grove), Tori Newland (Allen East),Angel Schneider (CG) and Nelaya Burden (Spencerville). Gregory is a three-time first team selection while Leis and King are two-time members of the first team.
Brian Schroeder, who led Columbus Grove (8-0, 18-3) to their fifth straight championship and sixth overall was selected as the NWC Coach of the Year.
Making the second team were Laykin Garmatter (Bluffton), Alycia Lindeman (Delphos Jefferson), Libby Schaadt (Bluffton), Bailey Gregory (Crestview), Abby Gladwell (Columbus Grove).
Honorable mention selections were Olivia Cunningham (Crestview), Kendall Bollenbacher (Lincolnview), Addy Stewart (Delphos Jefferson), Sydney McCullough (Paulding), Courtney Sumner (Ada), Kayla White (Bluffton), Gillian Goecke (Spencerville), Savanah Ridenour (Columbus Grove), Brianna Ebel (Lincolnview), Janae Pease (Paulding).
Wolf tabbed top MAC player
Minster’s Ivy Wolf was named the Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Fort Recovery’s Holly Gann and Marion Local’s Beth Streib shared co-coaches of the year honors.
Fort Recovery and Marion Local at 8-1 both tied for the MAC crown.
Joining Ivy on the first team were Lauren Gilliland (Coldwater), Val Muhlenkamp (Fort Recovery), Heidi Rethman (Marion Local), Janae Hoying (Minster), Madison Cordonnier (New Bremen), Ellie Gabel (New Knoxville), Meg Jurosic (New Knoxville), Alyssa Buschur (St. Henry), Addy Vaughn (St. Henry), Paige Gaynier (Delphos St. John’s), Lindsey Winner (Versailles).
Collecting second team honors were Annelise Harlemert (Coldwater), Kate Leichty (Coldwater), Alli Vaughn (Fort Recovery), Kierra Wendel (Fort Recovery), Sammy Hoelscher (Marion Local), Alan Pohlman (Marion Local), Kaylee Fruend (New Bremen), Morgan Leffel (New Knoxville), Gabrielle Stober (Parkway), Danielle Kunk (Versailles), Caitlin McEldowney (Versailles) and Brook Stonebroker (Versailles).
Receiving honorable mention accolades were Riley Rismiller (Coldwater), Brooke Kahlig (Fort Recovery), Brooke Homan (Marion Local), Averi Wolf (Minster), Melanie Koenig (Delphos St. John’s) and Hannah Barga (Versailles).

ONU 73, Heidelberg 53
DA — The Ohio Northern men’s basketball team ended its 2019-20 home slate in style Wednesday night inside the ONU Sports Center. The Polar Bears won their second straight game, downing Heidelberg 70-53.
The victory improved Northern to 8-16 overall and 4-13 in Ohio Athletic Conference play. The loss dropped the Student Princes to 10-14 overall and 8-9 in conference action.
ONU was led by a balanced scoring effort. Freshman Landen Long (Mason) paced the Polar Bears, pouring in 17 points, on 6-for-10 shooting, off the bench.
Junior Thomas Phillips (Kenton) added 11 points and seven rebounds. Seniors Austin Allemeier (Elida) and Caleb Bryan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) tallied nine points apiece, while freshman C.J. Napier (Miamisburg/Bishop Fenwick) chipped in eight points to go alongside a team-high 11 rebounds and three assists.
Northern shot 45.6 percent (26 of 57) from the floor and 47.4 percent (9 of 19) from 3-point land. The Student Princes connected on just 35.6 percent (21 of 59) of their field-goal attempts and 33.3 percent (6 of 18) of their 3-pointers.
Tamal Watkins led Heidelberg with 11 points, and Dylan Woods added 10.
Women’s basketball
ONU 55, Heidelberg 52
TIFFIN — The Ohio Northern women’s basketball team edged Heidelberg 55-52 on Wednesday at Seiberling Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears overcame a 37-29 deficit with 3:24 remaining in the third quarter en route to improving to 18-6 overall and 12-5 in OAC action.
ONU led 54-46 with 2:45 to go before the Student Princes (8-16 overall, 4-13 OAC) cut the gap to 54-52 with 1:15 to play.
With ONU up 55-52 and 3.9 seconds left, a potential buzzer-beating 3-pointer by HU was blocked by senior Abby Weeks (West Chester/Mount Notre Dame).
Both Weeks and senior Emily Mescher (Maria Stein/Marion Local) scored 12 points and secured five rebounds to lead Northern.
