Walton named top player

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – It’s been 30 years since a Horizon League player has collected three-straight Nike® Horizon League Player of the Week accolades, but Northern Kentucky’s Dantez Walton, the Lima Central Catholic product, has ended the stretch with his third such honor in the last three weeks.

Walton averaged 25.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in leading NKU to a pair of wins, a 22-point road shellacking of Miami (Ohio) (76-54) and a 19-point defeat of Eastern Kentucky (76-57) at home. The senior forward was highly efficient across the two games, converting 65 percent (20-of-31) from the field and 50 percent (7-of-14) from beyond the arc.

In the first matchup of the week, Walton converted 13-of-20 field-goal attempts, including 4-for-9 from 3-point land, en route to 32 points at Miami. That marked his third 30-point outing in a four-game span. He added eight rebounds and four assists.

The native of Lima, Ohio, then made 7-of-11 field goals and 3-of-5 from long range in an 18-point, nine-rebound showing against Eastern Kentucky.

During Walton’s three-week run, the Norse have played five games against Division I competition and he is averaging 26.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. He’s also shot lights out during that stretch, making 57 percent all shots (47-of-83) and 50 percent (19-of-38) from 3-point territory.

Dayton’s Negele Knight was the last Horizon League player to win three-straight player of the week honors. The Flyer accomplished the feat in the 1989-90 season.

Northern Kentucky is currently 7-3 on the year and will be back in action at BB&T Arena on Sunday, Dec. 15, when it hosts Illinois State at 2 p.m.
