Roundup: Ohio Northern advances in Division III women’s soccer

ADA — The Ohio Northern women’s soccer team defeated Grove City (Pennsylvania) 2-0 Saturday at Kerscher Stadium to advance to the second round of the Division III NCAA Tournament and will play Scranton (Pennsylvania) at 1 p.m. today at the same venue.

Scranton topped Centre (Kentucky) 5-4 in penalty kicks after finishing the second overtime tied at 2 in the other first-round match played in Ada.

Carissa Beckham netted her first-career goal in the 22nd minute of ONU’s match off a feed from Rose Nienaber.

Sydney Leshnak had the Polar Bears’ other tally during the 56th minute. She logged her third score of the season unassisted.

Goaltender Meagan Grierson had four saves to register her 11th shutout of the season and program-best 43rd of her career.

LIMA — Kate Agyemang had two goals, Brooke Goodrich had a goal and two assists, Julie Cazanave and Arianna Cirillo each had a goal and Olga Massombo and Agnes Stefansdottir each had an assist as the University of Northwestern Ohio (19-1) won the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament championship. Lisa Venrath made three saves to earn the shutout in goal.

CALVIN, Mich. — Tessa Pitcovich and Kathleen Colvin earned All-Region honors en route to leading Ohio Northern to a seventh-place finish in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regionals at the Gainey Athletic Complex on Saturday.

The 6-kilometer race was shortened by 300 meters due to unsafe course conditions.

Pitcovich was 13th of 233 finishers in 21:47.60 and Colvin was 35th in 22:29.07. Alexis Cash was 67th in 23:02.9 for Bluffton, which finished 22nd in the team standings.

10th at regional

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Ohio Northern concluded the 2019 season season with its 15th straight top-10 regional finish. The Polar Bears placed 10th in a field 38 at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at the Gainey Athletic Complex on the campus of Calvin University.

Fort Recovery[’s Travis Sutter paced Northern. He ran a time of 24:53.37, which placed him 34th in a field of 255 and earned him All-Region distinction.

Bluffton’s Connor Gulick was 118th in 26:13.4. The Beavers were 28th as a team.

ONU goes 3-1

ADRIAN, Mich. — Ohio Northern posted a 3-1 record at the Adrian Duals at the Merrilat Center.

The Polar Bears (3-1 overall) defeated Milwaukee (Wisconsin) School of Engineering 44-6, Fontbonne (Missouri) 46-6 and Penn State-Behrend 46-12 and fell to Central (Iowa) 22-20.

Four Polar Bears posted 4-0 records on the day, led by Ada grad Chase Sumner with three pins and a tech fall at 149 pounds.

Cash Thompson had two pins at 197, Allen East grad Schuyler Caprella had a pin and a tech fall at 157 and senior Seth Transue had a pin and a major decision at 133.

Women’s basketball

Bluffton 62, Olivet 59

OLIVET, Mich. — Sammy Shardo had 17 points and Brianna Gillig and Nora Hemminger each scored 12 for Bluffton (2-0). Gillig also had nine rebounds and teammate Tj Mills had seven assists.

Rochester 73, UNOH 69

LIMA — Tya Bell had 20 points, Fort Recovery grad Tori Lennartz scored 18, Lima Senior grad Talor Washington had 10 points and New Knoxville grad Erin Scott contributed six rebounds for UNOH (1-6, 0-2 WHAC).

Men’s basketball

Bluffton 83, Thiel 58

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Bath grad Andrew Renner (18), Jameel Cosby (15), Dezman Brown (15) and Isaah Taylor (14) each scored in double digits for Bluffton (1-1) at the Buzz Ridl Classic. Brown, Taylor and teammate Jerred Kinnaird each had seven rebounds.

Rochester 90, UNOH 63

LIMA — Nathan Lessing had 17 points and six rebounds, Bailey Gardner scored 15 and Justin Koepp finished with seven rebounds for UNOH (2-4, 0-2 WHAC).
