CINCINNATI (AP) — The New York Mets wasted a first-inning rally by batting out of turn, and Adam Duvall led off the 10th inning with a homer that sent the Cincinnati Reds to a 2-1 victory Wednesday and concluded a series that will be remembered for an unexpected trade between the teams.
Duvall connected for his first career game-ending homer, a drive off A.J. Ramos (1-2).
Catcher Devin Mesoraco started for the Mets and went 0 for 4, a day after the Reds dealt him to New York for pitcher Matt Harvey.
The Reds won a pitching-dominated game and took two of three from the Mets, only their second series win of the season. They’re 10-27, their worst start since the Great Depression.
Raisel Iglesias (1-0) retired six straight batters, faced, fanning three.
The Mets lost for the eighth time in nine games. They’ve been blanked three times during the slump and held to two runs or less four other times. New York has dropped 16 of 23 following an 11-1 start, falling into fourth place in the NL East.
New York got off to a rough start in the first inning, when Wilmer Flores fanned for the second out and Asdrubal Cabrera doubled, following the announced batting order. However, the lineup card the Mets turned into the umpires had those two switched in the order.
Plate umpire Gabe Morales called an out, nullifying the double and ending the threat. The out was credited to Jay Bruce, who was due up next.
Following their correct order the next time through, the Mets got a run in the third when Brandon Nimmo tripled off Sal Romano and scored on Cabrera’s groundout.
Zack Wheeler had retired 12 straight before the Reds rallied in the sixth to tie it on Joey Votto’s single.

The Reds were on the other end of a batting snafu 10 years earlier at Shea Stadium. They batted out of turn in the ninth inning after a double switch during an 8-3 loss to the Mets on May 11, 2008.

Mets: RHP Hansel Robles flew back to New York for an MRI on his right knee, which he twisted Tuesday night while reacting to a bunt. X-rays were negative. … LF Yoenis Cespedes was out of the starting lineup for a day to rest his sore right thigh. He pinch hit in the 10th and grounded out.
Reds: There’s no set plan for when Harvey will pitch or whether he’ll be used as a starter or reliever initially. He’s in Los Angeles and will join the team for the start of a series Thursday against the Dodgers.

Mets: After a day off, the Mets open a three-game series in Philadelphia behind LH Steven Matz (1-3), who is coming off his first quality start of the season. He allowed one run on three hits in six innings of a 2-0 loss to the Rockies.
Reds: Open a four-game series against the Dodgers, who have won their last eight games against Cincinnati and 17 of the last 20. Tyler Mahle (2-4) faces Walker Buehler (2-0).
