Newland hits, pitches Allen East to win

PERRY TOWNSHIP – It was all about Allen East and pitcher Riley Newland as the Mustangs paid a visit to Perry for softball action with the Commodores Wednesday evening.

Allen East run-ruled Perry 15-0 as Newland tossed a three-hit shut-out, and, for good measure Newland also went 3-for-4 at the plate with two inside the park home runs and eight runs batted in.

The Commodores struggled defensively as they committed five errors in the game in addition to misplaying several fly balls in the outfield.

“We made too many errors and those are hard to recover from,” Perry coach Bruce Wilhelm said. “Mistakes are killing us and we can’t afford to give teams extra chances.”

The loss dropped the Commodores to 2-6 on the year while Allen East improved their season record to 7-5 with the victory.

Allen East grabbed a quick 2-0 lead when they plated two runs in the top of the first inning. Newland connected for a two-out double that scored Lakin Bashman and Chloe Lawrence.

The Mustangs took control in the second inning with a six run outburst that gave them an 8-0 lead. The big hit was an inside the park home-run by Newland.

Allen East put the run rule into effect as the scored eight more times in the third inning to take a 15-0 lead. Newland again homered, this time a inside the park grand slam that put the game out of reach for the Commodores.

The best chance Perry had to score came in the bottom of the second when they loaded the bases with two outs. Newland responded by stranding all three runners as she induced a foul ball pop-up to third base for the final out of the inning.

The final two at bats for Perry produced statistical oddities as all three outs in the fourth inning were on ground balls back to Newland who tossed to first baseman Sydney Miller for the easy 1 to 3 outs. In the fifth Newland induced three fly balls that were all caught by Miller for the put-outs.

“I thought Newland pitched a good game tonight; if you don’t give up a run it is a solid outing.” Mustangs coach Paul Patton said. “Any time you get a win it is a good night but we still have quite a few things to work on.”

Besides the big night at the plate by Newland the Mustangs got two hits apiece by Gracie Young, Bashman, Lawrence, and Summer McClusky.
