Rockford, Ottawa bass anglers in hunt to qualify for nationals

A pair of area bass anglers are closer to a return trip to the All-American national tourney after qualifying for the third and final day today at the Barren River Regional of the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL).

Dick Shaffer, of Rockford, and Kyle Weisenburger, of Ottawa, sit sixth and eighth after two days of regional competition on the river out of Scottsville, Kentucky. A dozen anglers out of 160 qualified for the final day. To advance to the All-American, anglers must finish in the top eight.

Shaffer has caught nine bass through two days. They weighed 19 pounds, 8 ounces. Weisenburger has caught nine bass in two days. Their weight was 19 pounds, 3 ounces.

Bot caught a five-bass limit on opening day Thursday. Shaffer’s weighed 11 pounds, 12 ounces while Weisenburger’s weighed 12 pounds, 7 ounces. On Friday, Shaffer caught four bass that weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces while Weisenburger caught 4 bass that weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces.

On the co-angler side, Jon Angstmann, of St. Marys, sits in 11th place going into the final day. He has caught five bass in two days that weighed 10 pounds, 7 ounces.
