WAPAKONETA — Devon Dobie loves racing. In fact, Dobie loves racing so much that he came back every weekend while he was in college to race at Limaland. Dobie and company will be competing tonight in the Busch Clash w/Ken Schrader — Presented by: Anheuser Busch Sales of Lima at Limaland Motorsports Park. The pit gate opens at 4:30 and racing starts at 7:30 p.m..
Dobie, who graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in mechanical engineering on April 30, 2016, never missed a race while he was away.
“I came home for every race every weekend,” Dobie said. “It was a challenge but luckily in mechanical engineering, we had to do several co-ops. There were a lot of great places around here to do that. I spent two summers at home but I had one summer of classes at school. That was more of a challenge. I didn’t feel as involved working on the car in the garage, but I love racing and it’s what I do.”
Even though there haven’t been many races yet due to the rainy weather, Dobie knows how stacked the K&L Ready Mix NRA Sprint division is.
“You can just see it in the results every week,” Dobie said. “You’ll have a guy finish in the top five one week and not even make the top ten or feature race the following week. I think there are 10 to 12 cars that can find a way into the top few positions.”
Every driver has goals. Dobie makes sure to keep his goals set out in front of him and works hard to achieve them.
“Right now everybody has to go through Jared Horstman,” Dobie said. “He’s figured things out. We want to win more than one race this year. We’ve won one race the past few years and this year we want to win more than one. We’re focusing on putting good nights together.”
Dobie also enjoys competing at his home tracks of Limaland and Waynesfield. Growing up and living in Wapakoneta, he’s able to get to every race and his family and friends are able to get to many races as well.
“It’s cool going to new tracks and getting more experience,” Dobie said. “At home is so special though. Being only 10-20 minutes away is great. I’ve been racing since I was five years old and my grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, friends and a lot of other people have always been around and have been really supportive.”
